Concerns over the integrity of elections in India are intensifying, with senior Congress leaders like Rahul Gandhi and P. Chidambaram raising significant accusations against the Election Commission of India (ECI) and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Congress MP Rahul Gandhi has directly implicated the BJP and the ECI in alleged electoral malpractices, widely claiming that the Modi-led BJP, in alleged collusion with the ECI, selectively manipulates Lok Sabha and key state elections.
While initial concerns focused on electronic voting machine (EVM) tampering, public outcry has reportedly led to a diversification of these tactics. New alleged methods now include tampering with electoral rolls, fraudulent election result declarations, voter intimidation, and bribery.
It is contended that without these purported illicit practices, the BJP and Modi would struggle to win elections, given widespread public discontent over poverty, corruption, inflation, unemployment, lawlessness, and religious animosity in the Modi regime.

Adding to these broader accusations, Senior Congress leader P. Chidambaram has sharply criticized the ECI concerning the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise, particularly in Bihar and Tamil Nadu. Chidambaram questioned the ECI’s conclusion that several lakh voters in Bihar have “permanently migrated”, leading to the deletion of their names from the voter list.
He demanded to know how the ECI reached such a conclusion and whether a thorough inquiry was conducted for each case, particularly given the scale of 37 lakh persons needing such an inquiry within a 30-day period. Chidambaram asserted that mass disenfranchisement is a serious issue, noting that the Supreme Court is hearing petitions on the matter.
Furthermore, Chidambaram highlighted alarming reports of approximately 6.5 lakh migrant workers being “added” to Tamil Nadu’s electoral rolls, which he called “alarming” and “patently illegal”. He argued that calling migrant workers “permanently migrated” is an insult to them and a gross interference in the right of Tamil Nadu’s electorate.
He questioned why migrant workers should not return to their home states like Bihar to vote, as they usually do, for instance, during festivals like Chhath puja. Chidambaram stressed that a person enrolled as a voter must have a fixed and permanent legal home.
In response to these criticisms, the Election Commission of India (ECI) stated that no claims or objections had been filed by any political party with respect to the draft rolls, as of August 3rd, 3:00 PM, regarding additions of eligible electors or deletions of ineligible ones.
While Rahul Gandhi and other Congress leaders keep making shallow statements about election frauds in India, they are so weak that they cannot ensure free and fair elections in the country.
