GENEVA – UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk issued a scathing condemnation on Wednesday regarding a massive wave of Israeli strikes across Lebanon, describing the reported deaths and injuries of hundreds of civilians as “appalling”.
The escalation saw the Israeli military carry out approximately 100 strikes within a single 10-minute window, targeting the southern suburbs of Beirut, southern Lebanon, and the eastern Bekaa Valley. High Commissioner Türk noted that this “carnage” occurred just hours after a ceasefire agreement with Iran was reached, an act he said “defies belief” and places “enormous pressure on a fragile peace”.
Devastation on the Ground
Reports from the ground indicate that hospitals are currently overwhelmed by mass casualties. A UN Human Rights team visiting a strike site in the capital described a scene of total devastation, reporting several bodies lying amid the rubble.
Specific incidents highlighted the impact on civilian infrastructure:
- An overnight strike near Hiram Hospital in Al-Aabbassiye reportedly killed four people and damaged the medical facility.
- An attack on an Islamic Health Authority ambulance in Qlaileh resulted in the deaths of three people.
A Growing Humanitarian Crisis
The latest strikes follow weeks of intense conflict. Since March 2, 2026, Lebanese authorities have reported that over 1,500 people—including more than 200 women and children—have been killed, while over one million people have been displaced. During the same period, missile and drone attacks by Hezbollah on northern Israel resulted in two civilian deaths and significant damage to residential infrastructure. Türk condemned all such attacks and urged an immediate end to the violence from both parties.
Legal and Territorial Concerns
Türk emphasized that international humanitarian law is “non-negotiable,” stressing the fundamental principles of distinction and proportionality to protect civilians. He called for prompt, independent investigations into all alleged violations to ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
Furthermore, the High Commissioner expressed deep concern over displacement orders now covering approximately 14 percent of Lebanon, including the entire region south of the Zahrani river. He specifically cited troubling statements from Israeli officials regarding the potential occupation or annexation of parts of southern Lebanon.
“The international community must act quickly to help bring an end to this nightmare,” Türk stated, warning that regional peace efforts will remain incomplete as long as the Lebanese people live in “fear of further attacks”.
