Trump Offers Migrants Money and Travel to Voluntarily Leave US

Donald Trump’s newly announced plan proposes to offer financial incentives, including stipends and plane tickets, to undocumented immigrants who agree to leave the United States voluntarily

RMN News Story

Donald Trump has unveiled a new initiative aimed at encouraging undocumented immigrants to voluntarily depart the United States, offering financial incentives such as stipends and plane tickets to those who agree to self-deport

In a recent interview with Fox Noticias, the US President detailed his administration’s plan, stating that this approach aims to prioritise the deportation of individuals with serious criminal records while potentially creating a pathway for “good” individuals to return to the US legally in the future.

Trump elaborated on the financial aspect of the plan, explaining, “We’re going to give them a stipend. We’re going to give them some money and a plane ticket, and then we’re going to work with them — if they’re good — if we want them back in, we’re going to work with them to get them back in as quickly as we can”

This initiative signals a potential shift from Trump’s previously more stringent stance on immigration, introducing the possibility of a smoother process for certain individuals to return legally after self-deportation. The program has been referred to as a “self-deportation program”.

Beyond incentivising departure, the plan also seeks to address labour needs in key sectors such as agriculture and hospitality. Trump indicated that his administration would aim to connect departing individuals with suitable job openings, stating that they would recommend people to fill needed positions, a move he believes would be “very soothing” for farmers.

He emphasised the importance of ensuring that hotels and farms have access to the workforce they require, suggesting that this plan would ultimately allow workers currently in the US without legal permission to leave and then return through legal channels.

During the interview, a clip was shown featuring a Mexican man who has lived in the US for over two decades and has American citizen children. The man, reportedly undocumented, expressed support for Trump’s approach, particularly regarding the deportation of those who commit crimes.

Trump responded positively to this, saying, “I look at this man. I say, this is a guy that we want to keep,” and added he would likely “take heat for saying it”. He also suggested that this individual was probably not in danger of deportation.

CBP Home App from Trump Administration

The Trump administration has already been encouraging immigrants to assist in their own expulsion, with the introduction of the CBP Home app. This app allows undocumented immigrants to declare their intention to leave the country voluntarily, potentially streamlining the self-deportation process.

While this new plan aims to tackle labour shortages and promote legal immigration pathways, specific details regarding its implementation timeline and eligibility criteria have not yet been disclosed. According to Reuters, the White House has not provided further comments beyond Trump’s initial statements.

It is important to note that Trump, a Republican, has previously vowed to deport record numbers of migrants in the US illegally and has actively sought to increase arrests and deportations. This new incentivised voluntary departure program could be seen as a complementary strategy within his broader immigration policy.

The success of this initiative will likely hinge on several factors, including the willingness of undocumented immigrants to participate and the practical effectiveness of tools like the CBP Home app. The offer of financial assistance and the possibility of future legal re-entry could be key motivators for some individuals and families.

This initiative aims to prioritise the deportation of those with criminal records while exploring avenues for “good” individuals to potentially return legally. The plan also intends to support vital industries by facilitating the return of needed workers through legal channels.

While the concept represents a nuanced approach compared to previous hardline stances, the detailed mechanics and overall effectiveness of the program remain to be seen.
