Thousands of people across the United States have taken to the streets in a series of demonstrations protesting against recent actions by President Donald Trump. Known as “50501”, signifying “50 protests, 50 states, 1 movement”, these events were held on Saturday (April 19) and coincided with the 250th anniversary of the start of the American Revolutionary War.
Protests occurred in numerous locations, including outside the White House, at Tesla dealerships, and in the centres of many cities. A variety of grievances were expressed by demonstrators. Many called for the return of Kilmar Ábrego García, who was mistakenly deported to El Salvador.
Protesters also voiced their opposition to actions by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), President Trump’s initiative aimed at cutting US government jobs and other spending.
In Massachusetts, where celebrations commemorated the battles of Lexington and Concord, similar demonstrations took place, with people holding “No Kings” signs referencing the revolution against English rule.
A “50501” demonstration was also held in Boston. Organisers stated their opposition to what they described as President Trump’s civil rights and constitutional violations, including efforts to deport immigrants and reduce the size of the federal government.
The protests followed earlier nationwide demonstrations that occurred two weeks prior and were reported to be larger, taking place in 1,200 locations across all 50 states. Recent polling from Gallup indicates that 45% of voters approve of President Trump’s performance in his first quarter, which is higher than the 41% approval during the same period in his first administration but remains lower than the average first-quarter rating of 60% for presidents elected between 1952 and 2020. Another poll by Reuters/Ipsos showed a dip in his approval rating to 43% from 47% on Inauguration Day, with only 37% approving of his economic performance.
While most protests were peaceful, one incident involved Representative Suhas Subramanyam, a Democrat, who posted a video of a man holding a Trump sign confronting him. Demonstrators in various locations carried signs and chanted slogans, with some drawing on the spirit of the Revolutionary War and expressing concerns about what they perceive as threats to democratic ideals and executive overreach.
In Denver, protesters expressed solidarity with immigrants and held signs saying “Hands Off!”. In San Francisco, hundreds formed a “Impeach & Remove” human banner.
