The US Treasury Department announced on Thursday that future US dollar notes will carry President Donald Trump’s signature alongside that of the Treasury Secretary. This decision marks the first time in history that a sitting president’s signature will appear on paper currency, and the first time any such signature has been included since 1861.
According to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, the move is designed to commemorate the United States’ 250th anniversary (semiquincentennial) in 2026. Bessent stated that the new currency is an appropriate way to recognize the “historic achievements” of the country and the administration’s “Golden Age economic revival”. Beyond paper notes, officials are also considering a $1 coin featuring Trump’s profile on one side and an image of him before the American flag on the other.
The announcement has already generated significant debate regarding its legal and political implications. While US Treasurer Brandon Beach described the signature as a well-deserved “mark on history,” critics point to an 1866 law that restricted the depiction of living individuals on currency to prevent the appearance of “monarchy-like practices”.
This initiative follows a previous instance of the President featuring his likeness on official materials, specifically the “Trump Gold Card“ immigration initiative launched in December 2025, which also displayed his image and signatures.
Some observers have characterized these actions as part of a “visual ego” seen in modern autocracy, comparing the move to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 2021 decision to place his photograph on Covid-19 vaccination certificates. Despite these criticisms, the Treasury maintains that the signature serves as a symbol of “prosperity, strength, and the unshakable spirit of the American people”.
