Donald Trump Becomes First Living President on US Currency in a Century with New Semiquincentennial $1 Coin
The US Mint has launched a golden-colored $1 coin featuring Donald Trump to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary in 2026. This historic release marks the first time a living president has appeared on US currency in a century, bypassing a federal ban through a legislative design clause. Additionally, the US Treasury had announced that Trump’s signature will appear on future paper currency, a decision that has sparked both economic praise and political criticism.

Donald Trump Makes History as First Living President on US Currency in a Century
Donald Trump’s portrait has made its way onto a new United States coin, representing a historic shift in how American political figures are commemorated on the nation’s currency. The US Mint has officially launched a $1 coin featuring a portrait of Trump alongside the traditional inscriptions “LIBERTY” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.” This special release is designed to celebrate the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States, known as the Semiquincentennial, in 2026.
Bypassing the Century-Old Ban
While federal law generally prohibits a living president from appearing on US currency, officials successfully bypassed the restriction. Designers and policymakers utilized a specific design clause embedded in the Semiquincentennial legislation to overcome the long-standing ban, making Trump the first living president to be featured on American currency in one hundred years.
Although the new $1 coins possess a brilliant golden color, the US Mint has clarified that they do not contain any actual gold. Instead, the physical composition of the coin is 88.5% copper, with the remaining balance consisting of zinc, manganese, and nickel.
While the coins are not being placed into general circulation immediately, they are officially recognized as legal tender. The US Mint announced that the coins will be released into circulation and made available for purchase in bags and rolls this fall, exclusively through the United States Mint.
Signatures on Paper Currency
This historic numismatic release coincides with major changes to the nation’s paper currency. In March, the US Treasury Department announced that future US dollar notes will carry President Trump’s signature alongside the signature of Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.
This decision marks two major milestones:
- It is the first time in American history that a sitting president’s signature will appear on paper currency.
- It represents the first time any such signature has been included on paper currency since 1861.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent explained that incorporating the signatures on paper notes is an appropriate way to commemorate the nation’s 250th anniversary in 2026. Bessent stated that the new currency serves to recognize the country’s “historic achievements” and the administration’s “Golden Age economic revival.” Before finalizing the coin’s release, Treasury officials also evaluated a design featuring Trump’s profile on one side and an image of him standing before the American flag on the other.
Praise and Political Criticism
The Treasury Department continues to maintain that the signature on paper notes serves as a powerful symbol of “prosperity, strength, and the unshakable spirit of the American people.”
However, the decision has also drawn sharp criticism from political analysts and observers. Some critics view these currency updates as manifestations of a “visual ego” commonly observed in modern autocracies. They compare the signature and coin initiatives to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 2021 decision to feature his own photograph on Covid-19 vaccination certificates.
Despite the controversy, the US Mint is moving forward with the exclusive release of the Semiquincentennial coin, signaling a historic transformation of American legal tender.
