US President Donald Trump has officially launched the “Trump Gold Card,” a new immigration initiative designed to provide a direct path to citizenship for qualified and vetted individuals. The announcement was made on a Wednesday, with applications slated to open that afternoon.
Trump promoted the pathway on Truth Social, stating, “THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT’S TRUMP GOLD CARD IS HERE TODAY! A direct path to Citizenship for all qualified and vetted people. SO EXCITING!”.

Retaining Invaluable Talent
The primary aim of the Gold Card is to allow American companies to keep their invaluable talent. Trump highlighted the corporate demand for such a program, mentioning specific conversations with Apple CEO Tim Cook, who identified the loss of skilled foreign graduates—who otherwise must return to countries like India, China, or France—as a “real problem”. Under the Gold Card initiative, companies will be able to sponsor individuals, effectively “buy a card,” to keep that person in the United States.
This expedited residency pathway is intended to bring top talent and significant foreign investment into the country. Trump anticipates that the program will generate substantial revenue, estimating that it will take in “many billions of dollars” that will be directed to the United States Treasury.
Pathway and Financial Thresholds
The Gold Card is described as being “somewhat like a green card, but with big advantages”. Under US immigration rules, Gold Card holders will fall under the EB-1 or EB-2 categories. These categories are designated for individuals with “extraordinary ability,” including top researchers, distinguished professors, accomplished artists, and leading business figures, and they already provide a route toward permanent residency and eventual citizenship.
While the full details of the newly announced Gold Card are still emerging, earlier proposals for this type of residency program included significant financial requirements:
- Individual applicants were expected to donate $1 million to the US Treasury.
- Corporate-sponsored applicants were required to contribute $2 million.
- Both tiers also included a non-refundable $15,000 processing fee.
Additionally, registration for a similar program called the “Trump Card” was announced earlier in July, priced at a hefty $5 million, though it did not guarantee immediate naturalization. Earlier discussions also included a proposed Platinum Card tier, requiring $5 million in exchange for allowing an individual to spend up to 270 days a year in the US without incurring US tax on foreign income; however, it remains unclear if this Platinum Card is part of the current rollout.
Crucially, the website clarifies that having the required funds alone does not guarantee entry into the US. Applicants must still successfully qualify for permanent residency, be legally admissible, and have an available visa slot.
