Academy Initiates Global Search for Cinema’s Greatest Technical Innovations

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has formally announced the initiation of six distinct scientific and technical investigations for the 2026 award cycle. This targeted search serves as the critical preliminary phase leading up to the prestigious Scientific and Technical Awards presentation, which is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, April 20, 2027.

By publishing these investigation areas, the Academy aims to provide a transparent platform that invites individuals and companies with innovative devices or unique claims of technological advancement to submit their work for review. This collaborative evaluation ensures that the most impactful advancements across the global filmmaking community are recognized.

  From creative control to on-set safety, the Academy is officially searching for the next wave of filmmaking innovations that shape modern cinema.

A Focus on Creative Control and On-Set Precision

According to Scientific and Technical Awards Committee co-chairs Darin Grant and Rachel Rose, the six selected categories reflect the deep ingenuity of the filmmaking community across production, visual effects, animation, and sound. The committee’s goal is to analyze achievements that offer artists greater creative control, as well as pioneering technologies designed to enhance on-set precision, safety, and operational performance.

  With the submission deadline set for September 8, the road to the 2027 Scientific and Technical Awards has officially begun.

During the investigation process, the committee will focus heavily on three primary metrics to determine eligibility:

• Innovation: The uniqueness and novelty of the technology.
• Impact: The creative or technical difference the technology makes in filmmaking.
• Industry Adoption: How widely the technology has been integrated into the filmmaking pipeline.

Key Deadlines and Selection Process

The final deadline for creators and companies to submit additional entries for these technology categories is Tuesday, September 8, at 5:00 p.m. PT.

Following a thorough vetting process in each category, the Scientific and Technical Awards Committee will meet to vote on recommendations. These recommendations will then be presented to the Academy’s Board of Governors, who hold the final authority on all award decisions.
