Austin, Texas – Tesla has announced a groundbreaking achievement, completing the world’s first fully autonomous delivery of a vehicle. A self-driving Tesla Model Y made the entire journey from the company’s Gigafactory in Austin, Texas, to a customer’s home approximately 30 minutes away, navigating various road conditions entirely on its own.

The remarkable event was widely shared online, with Tesla initially releasing a three-minute time-lapse teaser, followed by a comprehensive 30-minute video. The footage clearly showed the Model Y departing from the Gigafactory garage with no one in the driver’s seat. Filmed from the back seat, the video captured the vehicle expertly maneuvering roads, executing turns, observing stop signs, yielding at red lights, and handling real-time traffic situations without any human intervention. At the journey’s end, the Model Y parked itself under the owner’s building. Tesla CEO Elon Musk reposted the video on X with the caption “Kapow”.

Elon Musk further confirmed the milestone on X, stating, “The first fully autonomous delivery of a Tesla Model Y from factory to a customer home across town, including highways, was just completed a day ahead of schedule!!”. He emphatically added, “There were no people in the car at all and no remote operators in control at any point. FULLY autonomous!”.

Musk also claimed, “To the best of our knowledge, this is the first fully autonomous drive with no people in the car or remotely operating the car on a public highway”. Ashok Elluswamy, Tesla’s Head of AI and Autopilot, confirmed that the vehicle reached speeds of up to 115 km per hour during the trip.

This autonomous delivery follows other recent advancements in Tesla’s self-driving initiatives. As of June 22, Tesla began testing its long-awaited robotaxi service in Austin, offering rides to a small group of influencers and investors in self-driving Model Y cars. Musk had previously hinted at both the robotaxi launch and the self-driving delivery on X earlier in the month. He has ambitious plans to have millions of robotaxis on the road in the future.

Beyond vehicles, Musk is also pushing for Tesla to produce large numbers of Optimus humanoid robots. These new AI products, including autonomous driving and robotics, are seen as crucial for boosting the company’s future, particularly as EV sales experience a slowdown in markets like North America and Europe, and amidst some public backlash concerning Musk’s politics. Tesla had previously demonstrated a form of hands-free driving in April, showcasing cars moving autonomously from its Texas factory floor to parking lots.

Despite this significant breakthrough, it remains unclear if autonomous deliveries will become a regular part of Tesla’s process.
