Congress MP Rahul Gandhi has launched a strong accusation against the Election Commission of India (ECI), alleging that it is “hatching a conspiracy” for “chunav chori (election theft)” in Bihar, mirroring alleged incidents in Maharashtra. Speaking at the Samvidhan Bachao Samavesh in Bhubaneswar on July 11, Gandhi asserted that the ECI is “working as a BJP wing” and is not performing its independent duties.
Mr. Gandhi specifically referred to the Maharashtra Assembly election last year, where he claimed that over 1 crore new voters were added between the Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha elections, with their origins unknown. He stated that the Congress party repeatedly requested the voter list and videography from the ECI but received no response. He now alleges that the same “theft” is being attempted in Bihar, a move he and leaders of the INDIA alliance have vowed to resist.

These allegations of electoral fraud extend beyond specific incidents, encompassing broader accusations against the Modi government. The government reportedly faces repeated accusations of electronic voting machine (EVM) manipulation, fudged electoral rolls, and the use of threats and bribes to voters. These actions are often alleged to be in collusion with the ECI to fraudulently secure election victories.
Domestically, the sources indicate that nearly 1.4 billion Indians are reportedly struggling under the Modi regime, grappling with issues such as “unprecedented poverty, corruption, inflation, unemployment, lawlessness, and religious animosity”.
Despite these widespread challenges, opposition parties are alleged to lack the courage or capacity to effectively challenge PM Modi and his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Furthermore, it is widely believed that Modi’s frequent and fervent rhetoric on terrorism and his false blame on Pakistan serve as a smokescreen to divert attention from these pervasive allegations of electoral fraud and to maintain his political advantage.
