Justice Yashwant Varma has officially resigned from his position as a judge at the Allahabad High Court, a move that effectively terminates the ongoing parliamentary impeachment process intended to remove him. In a resignation letter sent to President Droupadi Murmu on April 9, 2026, Justice Varma expressed “deep anguish” over the circumstances that constrained his decision, though he did not specify the exact reasons for his sudden departure. According to the sources, by resigning before the conclusion of the impeachment proceedings, Varma remains eligible for his pension and other judicial benefits that would have been forfeited had he been removed by Parliament.

The legal and political saga began on March 14, 2025, when a massive stash of cash was discovered at Justice Varma’s official residence in Delhi following a fire. Reports indicated that some stacks of the recovered money were over 1.5 feet high. While Justice Varma denied that the cash belonged to him, claiming the room was accessible to others, an in-house inquiry panel established by the Supreme Court found “sufficient substance” in the allegations against him. The panel concluded that Justice Varma and his family members exercised “active control” over the area where the funds were found.

Following the initial discovery, the Supreme Court transferred Justice Varma from the Delhi High Court to the Allahabad High Court and stripped him of all judicial duties. In August 2025, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla accepted an impeachment motion signed by 146 Members of Parliament, forming a three-member committee to investigate the charges. This committee comprised Supreme Court Justice Aravind Kumar, Madras High Court Chief Justice Maninder Mohan, and senior advocate BV Acharya.

The sources state that the scandal ignited intense public scrutiny regarding a purported bribe for bail” culture within the Indian judiciary. Union Minister Kiren Rijiju characterized the case as a “serious concern” for the integrity of the justice system, noting that the government sought a unified parliamentary front to address judicial corruption. Despite Varma’s attempts to challenge the inquiry’s findings in the Supreme Court, the top court dismissed his petitions, clearing the path for the legislative proceedings that have now concluded with his resignation.

Broader Implications: Reports on Entrenched Corruption

The current judicial crisis is further contextualized by reports such as the India Corruption Research Report 2025 and India Judicial Research Report 2025. These reports reportedly detail the entrenched corruption across India’s bureaucracy, political class, and judiciary, painting a grim picture of a nation allegedly “held captive by its criminal elite.” The ongoing developments highlight the urgent need for comprehensive reforms to restore public faith in the Indian justice system.
