
BBC News Appoints Media Veteran Harsha Subramaniam as Regional Director for South Asia to Drive Editorial and Audience Growth
The BBC has appointed Harsha Subramaniam as the Regional Director for South Asia to lead editorial content and business operations across the region. Subramaniam, a seasoned executive with over 26 years of experience, will oversee the BBC World Service’s multiple language services and aim to further expand the broadcaster’s significant regional audience.

The BBC has officially announced the appointment of Harsha Subramaniam as the Regional Director for South Asia. In this pivotal role, Subramaniam will be responsible for leading the BBC’s editorial and operational priorities, with a specific focus on enhancing opportunities for audience growth in one of the world’s most dynamic markets.
Subramaniam will lead a unified, cross-functional regional leadership team that integrates editorial heads with key operational departments, including Finance, Human Resources, and Business Operations. This appointment is a key component of the BBC’s international operating model, which recently saw similar director appointments for Africa, Europe, and the Americas to ensure editorial excellence and operational accountability globally.

Harsha Subramaniam brings a wealth of expertise to the BBC, with a career spanning over 26 years in print, television, digital media, and artificial intelligence. He joins the BBC from TollBit, where he served as the Head of India Partnerships. His distinguished professional history includes senior leadership roles at Meta as the Head of News Partnerships for India and Head of Global Content Strategy. Additionally, he spent a decade leading Bloomberg Media in India and served as a primetime business news anchor for CNBC India.
Fiona Crack, the Interim Global Director for BBC News, expressed her enthusiasm for the appointment, noting that Subramaniam brings “a wealth of journalistic and technological experience” to the role as he leads talented teams across a “growing and distinctive market”.
The BBC already maintains a strong foothold in the region. Last year, the broadcaster saw its South Asian audience grow to an average of 109 million people per week, representing a 14 percent increase year-on-year. Subramaniam expressed his honor in leading the BBC’s presence in the region, citing his long-standing admiration for the broadcaster’s editorial values and its position as the most trusted broadcaster in the world.
