Trump’s Territory Claims and Rhetoric Escalation

US President Donald Trump has escalated rhetorical tensions in the Persian Gulf by repeatedly sharing an image on Truth Social that describes the Strait of Hormuz as “NEW US Territory”. Trump first shared this graphic on August 18, following public comments on August 14 at a police academy on Long Island where he declared his intention to claim the waterway as US territory.

Iran has strongly dismissed these claims, with Mohsen Rezaei, the secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, highlighting the vast gap between Washington’s claims of ownership and its inability to reopen the shipping route, adding, “Welcome to the post-American order in the Persian Gulf”.

Record US Sanctions and China Trade Pressure

The war of words coincides with major economic escalation. Washington is preparing to announce what US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent describes as “the toughest sanctions in history” against Iran. These impending measures aim to pressure Tehran by squeezing its oil exports and choking off lifelines. The US has specifically urged China, a major purchaser of Iranian crude, to cooperate with these sanctions.

Tehran has vehemently condemned the proposed measures. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei argued that these secondary sanctions are an unlawful attempt to project American authority beyond its borders, stating they have “no foundation in international law”.

Security Warnings and Threats to Regional Trade Partners

As the economic confrontation intensifies, Iran is warning its neighbors against complying with the US pressure campaign. Mohsen Rezaei issued a clear threat, warning nearby countries that if they participate in Washington’s economic war, Tehran will classify them as enemies.

Despite experiencing substantial damage to its military infrastructure, Iran maintains robust drone and missile capabilities, leaving it well-positioned to continue disrupting maritime transport. The Strait of Hormuz remains heavily guarded and effectively blocked to unauthorized oil tankers.

Severe Disruptions to Global Energy Supplies

The crisis has caused a massive drop in global energy transport through the vital corridor. Historically, more than 20 million barrels of oil passed through the Strait of Hormuz daily. Recently, however, the US military assisted in moving an average of only 8 million barrels per day over a seven-day period.

Major crude carriers and liquefied natural gas (LNG) tankers have largely abandoned the route, leaving only a tiny handful of commodity vessels crossing the strait. To manage the flow, Iran has selectively permitted passage to a small number of Iraqi oil tankers following diplomatic requests from Baghdad.

Defiance and the Search for a Diplomatic Resolution

While Trump continues to demand that Tehran accept what he deems the “right deal” and warns other nations against assisting Iran, the Islamic Republic maintains a dual approach of defiance and tentative diplomacy. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has called for a peaceful diplomatic solution to end the conflict. Pezeshkian emphasized that Iran must seek a resolution that preserves its national strength and dignity.
