OpenAI Introduces Astra for Law: A Frontier Intelligence Platform for Legal Workflows and Research

OpenAI has introduced Astra for Law, a legal intelligence platform that combines the GPT-6 Astra model with specialized tools, privacy controls, and a dedicated legal search index. Built for law firms and legal technology providers, the system integrates with existing platforms like Clio and Relativity while delivering a 40 percent relative improvement in legal research accuracy compared to standard web search. The platform is initially available through a Trusted Access program for selected firms and will soon expand to API developers.

OpenAI has announced Astra for Law, a new intelligence foundation designed to help law firms and legal technology companies build specialized artificial intelligence applications and workflows directly around their legal expertise. The platform pairs OpenAI’s frontier model, GPT-6 Astra, with tailored settings, legal research tools, and contextual analysis instructions specific to professional legal practice.

API partners, including legal technology firms Harvey and Legora, are among the early organizations building on Astra for Law to integrate its intelligence into their proprietary products and legal workflows.

Dedicated Legal Search Index and Case Law Coverage

A primary component of Astra for Law is its dedicated legal search index. Legal research requires identifying exact precedent, analyzing relevant passages, and determining authority. Astra for Law utilizes a search index spanning over 230 million URLs to analyze U.S. case law, statutes, regulations, court rules, and administrative decisions, with new materials added daily.

Through a collaboration with the non-profit Free Law Project, Astra for Law incorporates the CourtListener database, covering more than 99.9 percent of published U.S. precedential case law. This index complements licensed legal databases and specialized products from providers such as Thomson Reuters.

Benchmark Performance and Research Accuracy

To evaluate performance improvements in legal research, OpenAI tested Astra for Law against the private validation set of Vals AI’s Legal Research Bench, using 200 U.S. legal research queries. The benchmark evaluates a model’s capacity to identify relevant source materials and produce correct research answers.

When evaluated at the highest reasoning effort, Astra for Law achieved an overall correctness rating of 54.0 percent, compared to 38.7 percent for GPT-6 Astra operating with standard web search alone. This reflects a 40 percent relative improvement in accuracy. On case-law queries specifically, Astra for Law identified 24 percent more reference cases and retrieved up to 54 percent more relevant target passages from court opinions.

Partner Ecosystem Plugins and Tool Integrations

Astra for Law connects directly to software systems widely utilized across the legal industry. OpenAI launched 26 partner-built ecosystem plugins that link ChatGPT with core management platforms, including Relativity, Clio, iManage, Intapp, DeepJudge, and Thomson Reuters HighQ.

These integrations enable practical workflow automations:

  • iManage: Allows practitioners to draft negotiation briefs in ChatGPT and archive them directly to matter files.
  • Intapp: Automatically surfaces recordable activities for billable time review.
  • DeepJudge: Connects historical transaction data into comparative analyses.
  • Thomson Reuters: Embeds HighQ matter context into ChatGPT alongside a preview of a forthcoming CoCounsel Legal connector.

Additionally, the ecosystem includes 9 community-developed plugins featuring 47 custom skills created by legal engineers at LegalQuants, LECG, and Skills.law. OpenAI also announced the general availability of ChatGPT for Word, permitting lawyers to perform proofreading, format checking, and text edits inside Microsoft Word.

Privacy, Governance, and Deployment

To address client confidentiality and governance requirements, OpenAI established the Trusted Access Program for eligible law firms. Under this framework, access is offered through ChatGPT and Codex under the model name “GPT-6 Astra Law” and API identifier gpt-6-astra-law.

Privacy controls include Zero Data Retention (ZDR) for API usage, while ChatGPT Enterprise interactions are excluded from human review by default. OpenAI is collaborating with law firm Latham and Watkins to design ethical walls, access permissions, and oversight structures. Furthermore, OpenAI is working alongside corporate and litigation firm Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen and Katz to refine how frontier models support complex legal judgment.

OpenAI plans to expand Astra for Law capabilities across future frontier models as part of a long-term investment in legal technology infrastructure.
