New Delhi – Union Home Minister Amit Shah chaired a significant security review meeting in New Delhi on May 7 with Chief Ministers and Lieutenant Governors from border states adjoining Pakistan and Nepal.
The high-level meeting, attended by leaders from Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Rajasthan, Gujarat, and West Bengal, along with officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs, Border Security Force (BSF), Intelligence Bureau (IB), and Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), focused on crucial security matters.
A major point of discussion was “Operation Sindoor,” described by Amit Shah as “a befitting reply from Bharat” to those challenging India’s borders, military, and citizens. This operation was launched by the Indian armed forces following the “heinous terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir, on April 22, 2025”. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had pledged that the country would deliver a fitting response.
The Home Minister conveyed gratitude for Prime Minister Modi’s “firm resolve and decision” regarding Operation Sindoor. He emphasised that an “appropriate response was given through Operation Sindoor” without ignoring the Pahalgam attack, sending “a strong message to the world”.
Operation Sindoor involved Indian armed forces attacking “nine specific locations linked to terrorists” in Pakistan in the intervening night of May 6-7, 2025. India claims that the operation successfully “destroyed their infrastructure,” including terrorist training camps, weapon bases, and hideouts. Organisations targeted included Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammed, Hizbul Mujahideen, and other terrorist groups, whose facilities were “completely destroyed”, according to the claims made by the Indian government.
Shah highlighted that Operation Sindoor is a testament to the “Modi government’s zero tolerance policy against terrorism”. Chief Ministers and Lieutenant Governors present in the meeting congratulated Prime Minister Modi and the “three armed forces for the success of Operation Sindoor”.
Beyond the discussion of the military operation, the Home Minister also issued guidelines for state preparedness. States were instructed to make arrangements for mock drills, ensure the smooth operation of essential services like hospitals and fire brigades, and guarantee an uninterrupted supply of essential goods. Shah advised keeping State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Civil Defence, Home Guards, and NCC on alert for any situation and encouraging public participation through citizens and NGOs.
Furthermore, strict vigil is to be kept on “anti-national propaganda by unwanted elements on social and other media platforms,” with prompt action taken in coordination with central and state agencies. Efforts must be made to maintain seamless communication, strengthen the security of vulnerable points, stop the spread of unnecessary fear and rumours among the public, and enhance coordination between local administration, the army, and paramilitary forces. Spreading awareness against rumours was also stressed.
