New Delhi/Islamabad, May 7, 2025 — Tensions between India and Pakistan have intensified following India’s launch of “Operation Sindoor,” a series of precision air and missile strikes targeting alleged terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir.
The operation was conducted in retaliation for a deadly terrorist attack on April 22 in Pahalgam, Indian-administered Kashmir, which resulted in the deaths of 26 Hindu tourists.
Operation Sindoor: Targets and Impact
In the early hours of May 7, the Indian Air Force executed 24 strikes over a 23-minute period, targeting nine locations, including Bahawalpur, Muridke, Tehra Kalan, Sialkot, Bhimber, Kotli, and Muzaffarabad.
These sites were identified as hubs for terrorist groups such as Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed. India’s Ministry of Defence described the strikes as “focused, measured, and non-escalatory,” emphasizing that no Pakistani military installations were targeted.
Pakistan reported that the strikes resulted in at least 26 civilian deaths, including children, and injuries to 46 others. Among the damaged structures were the Bilal Mosque in Muzaffarabad and an educational complex in Muridke.

Pakistan’s Response and Retaliation
In response, Pakistan condemned the Indian strikes as an “act of war.” Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif vowed a forceful military response, stating that Pakistan’s sovereignty had been violated. The Pakistani military claimed to have shot down five Indian fighter jets and a drone; however, India has not confirmed these losses.
Pakistan initiated heavy mortar shelling along the Line of Control (LoC), resulting in the deaths of three Indian civilians. Additionally, Pakistan declared a state of emergency in Punjab province and closed its airspace for 48 hours, causing significant disruptions to international flights.
International Reactions and Nuclear Concerns
The international community has expressed deep concern over the escalating conflict. UN Secretary-General António Guterres urged both nations to exercise maximum restraint to prevent further deterioration of the situation.
Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif warned of the potential for a nuclear confrontation, stating that if tensions lead to a full-scale war, the possibility of a nuclear exchange cannot be ruled out.
Current Status
As of now, both nations remain on high alert, with ongoing military engagements along the LoC. India has revoked Pakistani visas, banned imports, and restricted airspace access. The situation remains volatile, with the international community closely monitoring developments and advocating for diplomatic solutions to prevent further escalation.
