Picture of the Day: Mosquito Menace Grips Delhi

Today’s stark image from New Delhi brings into sharp focus the escalating mosquito menace plaguing India’s capital, a city already struggling with the unenviable title of the world’s most polluted and dirtiest national capital.

The photograph – by Rakesh Raman, Managing Editor, RMN News – centers on a lit mosquito repellent coil, its chemical fumes a desperate measure against the swarms of mosquitoes that have made life miserable for Delhi residents.

The sheer volume of stinking household waste littering the city has transformed it into a colossal breeding ground for these disease-carrying insects. As a result, mosquito density has increased manifold, effectively invading homes and forcing inhabitants to resort to potentially harmful repellents just to find respite.

This reliance on poisonous coils, starkly captured in the image, is a damning indictment of the Delhi government’s failure to tackle this critical public health issue. The inability to manage waste effectively and control mosquito breeding has left citizens vulnerable to irritating bites and, more alarmingly, the risk of contracting dangerous mosquito-borne illnesses.

This “Picture of the Day” serves as a powerful reminder of the interconnectedness of environmental neglect and public health crises. The buzzing threat within Delhi’s homes is a direct consequence of unchecked pollution and inadequate governance, demanding urgent and comprehensive action to safeguard the well-being of its residents.
