Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has launched a sharp attack on Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi, alleging that the PM “surrendered” during last month’s military conflict with Pakistan, known as Operation Sindoor. According to Gandhi, this alleged surrender occurred after receiving an “order” from United States President Donald Trump.

Speaking at an event, Mr. Gandhi sarcastically remarked that “A call came from (Donald) Trump and Narendraji immediately surrendered… history is witness to this”. He further jibed, saying, “Narendraji followed Trump saying ‘Narender, surrender’ by saying ‘yes, sir'”.

Gandhi contrasted this with the 1971 India-Pakistan war, highlighting that India broke Pakistan in 1971 despite a threat from America, and stating that “Lions and lionesses of Congress fight against superpowers and never bow down”. He added that he believes “BJP and RSS people” run away when pressure is applied. The RSS is noted as the ruling party’s ideological mentor.

The BJP swiftly countered Gandhi’s remarks. A party spokesperson randomly said that Mr. Gandhi’s comment suggested he “represents Pakistan’s ISI (Inter-Services Intelligence)” and is “misleading” the public.

Adding another layer to the situation are Trump’s ceasefire claims. The US President has repeatedly asserted that his administration played a significant role in brokering a cessation of hostilities between India and Pakistan in May. Despite India firmly stating that Trump had no such role, the US President insisted he “sure as hell” helped and reiterated his claim in a US court. Trump’s team even cited a “Fragile” India-Pak ceasefire to justify tariffs.

The military conflict, or Operation Sindoor, involved missiles and air strikes over four days, until May 10th. India had initially warned Pakistan against retaliating to its strikes, clarifying that only terrorist camps and bases would be targeted. However, Pakistan reportedly ignored this warning and responded by firing armed drones and missiles at military and civilian centres in India.

Hours after Trump claimed he had negotiated a ceasefire on May 10th, India confirmed the ceasefire. However, India explicitly stated that it was Pakistan that had reached out to end hostilities and that there had been no pressure from the US, whether diplomatic or related to ongoing trade deal talks.
