NEW YORK, NY – Anger over the Trump administration’s newly intensified immigration raids fueled protests across the United States on Tuesday (June 10). Demonstrations, which centered on Los Angeles, spread to several other cities including New York, Chicago, Atlanta, Omaha, and Seattle.

In New York City, thousands attended a protest against the federal government’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice) in Foley Square. Protesters held signs such as “Ice out of New York” and chanted slogans like “Why are you in riot gear? I don’t see no riot here”.

Councilmember Shahana Hanif of Brooklyn addressed the crowd in Foley Square, criticizing both the Trump administration and New York City Mayor Eric Adams. She stated that Mayor Adams “does not care about working class people” and is “collaborating with Trump to use tactics,” calling him “complicit”. Hanif also advocated for New York to remain a sanctuary city and called for increased protections for international students. Her call to “Stop the attacks and assaults on our students!” was met with cheers.

Across the country, protests also drew large crowds. In Chicago, thousands gathered outside an immigration court before marching through downtown streets, drumming and chanting, “No more deportations!”.

In Omaha, protesters marched and chanted “Chinga la migra,” a Spanish phrase roughly equivalent to “Fuck Ice,” after approximately 80 people were reportedly arrested in an immigration raid on a meat-packing plant.

A smaller crowd of about 50 protesters gathered outside the Henry M Jackson federal building in downtown Seattle to show solidarity with protesters in Los Angeles. Following a rally, the Seattle protesters reportedly barricaded driveways using e-bikes and e-scooters to block vehicles believed to be transporting detained immigrants.

These actions follow large rallies in Dallas and Austin on Monday. Organizers are planning up to 1,800 protests nationwide on Saturday to coincide with a military parade Donald Trump is scheduled to hold on his birthday in the nation’s capital.
