Kyiv is sounding the alarm ahead of a crucial summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin set for Friday, August 15, in Alaska, expressing deep concerns over potential peace agreements negotiated without Ukraine’s direct involvement. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders are intensifying efforts to pressure President Trump to side with Ukraine during the talks, emphasizing that “no decisions should be taken without Ukraine,” particularly concerning any changes to its borders by force.
The summit, announced by Trump on social media and confirmed by the Kremlin, is described as “quite logical” given Alaska’s proximity to Russia. However, the prospect of a ceasefire agreement without Kyiv’s voice has raised significant concerns.
President Trump has previously indicated that any peace deal could involve “some swapping of territories”. It is believed that Russian President Vladimir Putin’s demands include Kyiv surrendering parts of the Donbas region it still controls. However, Ukrainian President Zelensky strongly rejected such a concession on Tuesday, warning it “could be used as a springboard for future attacks by Russia,” which has recently been making gains.

In an online call with Trump on Wednesday, President Zelensky is expected to reiterate Ukraine’s firm stance. This follows a stark warning from Zelensky on August 12, where he tweeted about an intelligence and military command report on Putin’s intentions: “He is definitely not preparing for a ceasefire or an end to the war.” Zelensky stated that Putin aims only to present a meeting with America as his “personal victory” and then continue applying the same pressure on Ukraine.
“So far, there is no indication whatsoever that the Russians have received signals to prepare for a post-war situation,” Zelensky noted, adding, “On the contrary, they are redeploying their troops and forces in ways that suggest preparations for new offensive operations.” He concluded, “If someone is preparing for peace, this is not what he does”. Ukraine continues to keep its partners informed about the real situation on the battlefield, in diplomacy, and regarding Russia’s future planning.
The exclusion of Ukraine from direct peace talks also carries implications for President Trump’s broader ambitions. A peace initiative that sidelines Ukraine “will also harm Trump’s ambition to win the Nobel Peace Prize,” an award he is reportedly eyeing by stopping armed conflicts globally, including a claimed intervention between India and Pakistan in May 2025.
