Delhi: At least eight people have been killed and several others injured following a major explosion reported near the iconic Red Fort (Lal Quila) on Monday evening. A high alert has been sounded across Delhi in the wake of the incident.
The blast reportedly took place in a car outside the Lal Quila metro station. According to The Indian Express, the explosion occurred at 6:52 pm after a slow-moving vehicle stopped at a red light. Delhi Police confirmed that nearly 2-3 people were seated inside the car when the blast took place.
While initial reports confirmed eight fatalities, an NDTV report stated that the blast claimed eight lives and left more than 20 people injured. The nature of the explosion is not known yet.
In response to the emergency, seven fire tenders were pressed into action. A team of Delhi Police Special Cell Officers is currently at the blast site, and authorities have cordoned off the area.
Following the shocking event, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reportedly spoken to Union Home Minister Amit Shah to take stock of the situation, according to media sources.
The incident has already drawn political speculation. There is a likelihood that the Modi regime will blame Pakistan for the attack, similar to what occurred in the recent Pahalgam attack or the earlier Pulwama attack of 2019.
More details are currently awaited as investigations proceed.
