G7 2026: Shaping a New Geopolitical Landscape

The G7 Summit, held in Évian-les-Bains from June 15 to 17, 2026, concluded with a comprehensive statement addressing the world’s most pressing geopolitical challenges. Hosted by the President of the French Republic, the event brought together heads of delegation to coordinate on security, international solidarity, and economic growth.

Unwavering Commitment to Ukraine

G7 leaders emphasized a “new momentum” on the battlefield, committing to accelerate the delivery of air defense systems, interceptors, and long-range capabilities to Ukraine. Beyond immediate military aid, the group is considering extending licenses to bolster Ukraine’s domestic military production and agreed to provide critical support for energy resilience ahead of the winter season. To further isolate the Russian war economy, the G7 will strengthen sanctions on the oil and gas sectors.

A New Momentum: G7 leaders commit to increasing long-range capabilities and air defense systems to support Ukraine’s sovereignty.

Middle East Breakthroughs and the Strait of Hormuz

A significant highlight of the summit was the recognition of a diplomatic breakthrough between the United States and Iran. Leaders expressed support for a deal secured under the leadership of President Trump, which aims to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.

This agreement has facilitated the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. To ensure the resumption of safe maritime traffic, France and the UK are leading a multinational defensive initiative to protect merchant vessels and verify the removal of mines. Additionally, the G7 called for a robust ceasefire in Lebanon to achieve the disarmament of Hezbollah and pledged to accelerate reconstruction efforts in Gaza.

Historic Opportunity: The G7 welcomes a U.S.-led deal with Iran to secure the Strait of Hormuz and prevent nuclear proliferation.

Indo-Pacific Security and Global Economy

Turning to the Indo-Pacific, the G7 reaffirmed its opposition to unilateral attempts to change the status quo in the East and South China Seas by force. The leaders also reiterated their commitment to the complete denuclearization of North Korea and the need to combat North Korean cybercrimes.

Economic discussions centered on the “Global Convergence for Growth,” following a preliminary summit with China on June 11. The G7 aims to address global imbalances and promote sustainable growth, with future efforts transitioning to the G20 under the United States’ host year. The summit’s final sessions also prioritized the safe and efficient deployment of artificial intelligence.
