Picture of the Day: Toxic Waters Flow in Delhi Tributary

Today’s concerning image from New Delhi, the world’s most polluted and dirtiest national capital, reveals a tributary choked with toxic, black water. The photograph – by Rakesh Raman, Managing Editor, RMN News – captures a field view of this poisonous stream, its surface reflecting a disturbing sheen, highlighting a severe environmental hazard within the city.

Alarmingly, water from such sources ultimately contributes to the supply used in Delhi homes for daily consumption. This grim reality was brought to the forefront a few months ago when a Delhi MP (Member of Parliament) presented samples of similarly contaminated black water taken from households. [ Watch Video ]

Despite the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) forming the government of Delhi in February 2025, succeeding the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), the persistent challenges faced by the city’s residents remain evident. This toxic tributary stands as a stark symbol of the ongoing struggle to address pollution and ensure access to clean water for all – a fundamental necessity still jeopardized in the capital.

This “Picture of the Day” underscores the urgent and continuous need for effective measures to remediate New Delhi’s polluted water sources and guarantee the provision of safe drinking water to its population. The visual evidence of this toxic flow demands sustained attention and decisive action from the authorities.
