Today’s distressing image from New Delhi paints a grim picture of neglect, showcasing stinking water and heaps of filthy garbage festering in close proximity to both schools and residential colonies. This toxic confluence poses a significant and immediate health risk to the people of Delhi, a city where ensuring basic cleanliness continues to be a formidable challenge for the governing authorities.

Despite Chief Minister Rekha Gupta’s launch of a 20-day cleanliness drive on May 2, 2025, the evidence on the ground, as captured in this photograph, suggests a stark failure to achieve its intended goals. The persistence of such unhygienic conditions underscores the deep-rooted issues plaguing waste management and sanitation in the national capital.

Worryingly, this pervasive filth takes on an even more sinister dimension with the resurgence of new coronavirus / Covid-19 cases in Delhi and across the country. The presence of stagnant, stinking water and accumulated garbage creates ideal breeding grounds for various pathogens, potentially exacerbating the spread of infectious diseases and further endangering public health, especially for vulnerable school children and residents.

This “Picture of the Day” – by Rakesh Raman, Managing Editor, RMN News – serves as a powerful indictment of the ongoing failures in maintaining a clean and healthy environment for Delhi’s citizens. It is a stark reminder that superficial campaigns are insufficient to tackle the deep-seated problems of waste management.

The health and safety of Delhi’s communities demand urgent, sustained, and effective action to eradicate such hazardous conditions, particularly around educational institutions and residential areas.
