New Delhi – The Election Commission of India (EC) has strongly rejected recent “vote theft” allegations made by Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi, branding them “baseless”. The poll panel also revealed that it had previously extended invitations to Mr. Gandhi in June to discuss voter roll issues, which he reportedly did not answer.

Speaking to reporters about the Bihar Special Intensive Revision, Mr. Gandhi alleged that the EC was “involved in this vote theft” to benefit the BJP. He asserted having “open-and-shut proof” of this involvement, stating, “when we release it (proof), the entire country will come to know that the Election Commission is enabling vote theft”.

The Congress leader claimed his party had conducted a six-month investigation, uncovering evidence that, once revealed, would cause the EC to disappear from the country. Mr. Gandhi also issued a stern warning to those involved, stating, “Those who steal votes, remember – they will not be spared”.

He further declared, “Most importantly, whoever in the Elections Commission is involved in this exercise, right from top to bottom, we will not spare you. You are working against India, and this is no less than treason. Wherever you are, even if you are retired, we will find you“.

In response, the Election Commission stated that it had sent an email and a letter to Mr. Gandhi on June 12, 2025, inviting him to a meeting to discuss the voter roll issue, but he “had not responded” and “never sent any letter to EC on any issue whatsoever”. The EC characterized his statements as “wild allegations” and noted that he had “even started threatening EC and its staff,” which it found “Deplorable!”.

Despite what it referred to as “daily threats” and “irresponsible statements,” the EC reiterated its commitment to upholding fairness and transparency. The panel urged all election officials to “ignore such irresponsible statements and work in a fair and transparent manner,” adding that it “ignores such irresponsible statements and asks all its staff to continue working impartially and transparently”.
