Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said today (July 24) that his party possesses “concrete 100 per cent proof” that the Election Commission (EC) allowed cheating in a specific constituency in Karnataka. He emphasized that this is not 90 per cent, but a “100 per cent proof” that they will reveal when they decide to show it.

Gandhi explicitly alleged that the Election Commission is “not functioning as the Election Commission of India, and is not doing its job”. He stated that his party only examined one constituency to uncover this evidence, but he is “absolutely convinced” that this “drama” is occurring “constituency after constituency” across India.

The Alleged Modus Operandi of “Votes Theft”

Rahul Gandhi claims that the Congress party has “figured out the modus operandi of the ‘votes theft'” by studying a Lok Sabha constituency in Karnataka. The alleged method involves significant manipulation of voter rolls. Specifically, he highlighted the presence of “thousands and thousands of new voters,” many of whom are aged 45, 50, 60, or 65, within a single constituency. Gandhi noted that this includes both “voter deletion, voter addition, new voters who are way above 18”. He confidently stated, “so we have caught them”.

Broader Accusations and Diversified Tactics

Gandhi has intensified his accusations of electoral malpractices, directly implicating the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Election Commission of India (ECI). He claims that the BJP, with the ECI’s alleged help, has “stolen elections” in Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh, and he warned of similar issues arising in Bihar. It is widely contended that the Modi-led BJP, in alleged collusion with the ECI, selectively manipulates Lok Sabha and key state elections.

While initial concerns regarding electoral integrity reportedly focused on electronic voting machine (EVM) tampering, public outcry has purportedly led to a diversification of these alleged tactics. New methods now allegedly include:

• Tampering with electoral rolls
• Fraudulent election result declarations
• Voter intimidation
• Bribery

It is contended that without these purported illicit practices, the BJP and Modi would reportedly struggle to win elections, given widespread public discontent over issues such as poverty, corruption, inflation, unemployment, lawlessness, and religious animosity under the current government.

Context: Bihar Electoral Roll Revision

Rahul Gandhi’s remarks come in the context of an ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar. During house-to-house visits in this process, poll officials have reportedly found that more than 52 lakh voters were not present at their addresses. The opposition, including the RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, has been protesting against the SIR in both houses of Parliament, alleging that the EC’s exercise is aimed at disenfranchising voters in Bihar ahead of the assembly elections.

Rahul Gandhi’s Stance and Public Challenge

Gandhi has issued a stern message to the Election Commission, stating, “if you think you are going to get away with this, if your officers think they are going to get away with this, you are mistaken, you are not going to get away with this because we are going to come for you”. He affirmed his intention to present the proof of how the “theft of votes” is being done to both the people and the Election Commission “in black in white”.

Critique of Rahul Gandhi’s Efficacy

Despite these strong allegations, it is also noted that Rahul Gandhi is so weak that he can only deliver shallow rhetoric against BJP’s election malpractices. Actually, he cannot do any thing to resolve the election frauds issue.

The Election Commission is often seen as an impartial umpire whose role is to ensure fair play in the democratic game, maintaining the integrity of the electoral process for all participants. Rahul Gandhi’s allegations, however, suggest that this very umpire is not only allowing one team to cheat but is actively involved in manipulating the scoreboard and player rosters, turning a fair contest into what he claims is a rigged match.
