US President Donald Trump has demanded that Democratic donor George Soros and his son, Alexander, face charges under the federal racketeering law Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act. Trump made these accusations in a post on Truth Social, alleging that the pair are funding violent protests across the country.
He referred to George and Alexander Soros as “psychopaths” and vowed to prevent them from “ripping America apart”. Trump further accused the Soros family of supporting “violent protests” across the United States and causing “great damage” to the country.
In response to Trump’s comments, the Soros-funded nonprofit, Open Society Foundations, on August 27 issued a statement on X, calling the remarks “outrageous”. The foundation reaffirmed its mission to promote justice, human rights, and democracy.

When asked for comment, the Department of Justice referred only to a section of its manual that prohibits the disclosure of details about ongoing investigations.

Trump’s recent statements are part of a wider campaign of threats against his political rivals. In recent weeks, he has targeted former allies such as John Bolton and Chris Christie, and has linked Democratic lawmakers like Rep. Adam Schiff to Justice Department probes.
The president’s allegations follow years of attacks on Soros by MAGA Republicans, who have consistently targeted the Hungarian-American donor for his extensive financial support of Democratic and liberal causes. Soros has previously dismissed such criticism, once stating that Trump sought to “establish a mafia state” during his first term.
Policy disputes between the two figures include Soros’s support for vaccines and open borders versus Trump’s restrictions on Covid vaccines and border security. There have also been economic critiques of Trump’s tax cuts. Furthermore, conspiracy theories, often with anti-Semitic undertones, amplify their rift, with Trump alleging Soros controls prosecutors, though the sources note that evidence for this claim is lacking. Soros dismisses these allegations as baseless.
