When confronted with serious allegations of electoral manipulation, India’s ruling establishment often resorts to a strategy of deflection and personal attacks. A prime example is Union Minister Kiren Rijiju’s recent broadside against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, accusing him of working with foreign figures like George Soros to destabilize the country.
Rijiju’s statement, which lacks any substantiated proof, appears to be a reactive maneuver to counter the growing chorus of opposition voices accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP of massive vote theft.
A Desperate Counter-Narrative
Rijiju’s claims, broadcasted in an interview with ANI on August 23, paint a picture of a sinister conspiracy involving foreign entities and domestic opposition forces. He alleges that George Soros has allocated significant funds to destabilize the Indian government and that Rahul Gandhi and the Congress are complicit with these “anti-India” forces, including Khalistani groups. This narrative conveniently sidesteps the core issue raised by the opposition: the integrity of India’s electoral process.
The timing of this unsubstantiated attack is critical. It follows a nationwide campaign by the Congress and other opposition parties under the banner of “Vote chor, gaddi chhor” (Vote thief, quit the throne). Rahul Gandhi has been vocal, presenting what he calls empirical data and proof of election manipulation, going so far as to label PM Modi an illegitimate leader who secured his position through fraudulent means.
Rather than addressing these specific allegations with data and evidence, ministers like Rijiju choose to question the patriotism of those who raise them. This strategy serves to muddy the waters and shift the public debate from the government’s actions to the opposition’s perceived loyalty.

Election Fraud Allegations Gain Momentum
The opposition’s campaign is not confined to rhetoric. It is grounded in on-the-ground protests and symbolic acts of defiance. A powerful demonstration of this was the August 13 protest in Uttar Pradesh, where Samajwadi Party workers declared UP Congress chief Ajay Rai the “real MP from Varanasi.”
This act was a direct challenge to the official 2024 Lok Sabha election results, with protesters claiming that PM Modi had actually lost the seat by 150,000 votes but was declared the winner through electoral fraud.

Such protests reflect a deep-seated public frustration and a growing distrust in the electoral system. The opposition alleges that the BJP’s consistent victories, despite widespread public suffering from issues like unemployment, poverty, and inflation, can only be explained by large-scale election manipulation.
The alleged methods include selective EVM manipulation, electoral roll frauds, and voter bribery. These claims suggest that the BJP’s electoral success is not a reflection of popular mandate but a result of a rigged system.
The Unnecessary Idolization of a Politician
In fact, many BJP politicians, including Kiren Rijiju, owe their positions to this alleged vote theft. This creates a cycle where these individuals feel compelled to defend Modi, regardless of the accusations leveled against him. This dynamic fosters an environment of unnecessary idolization.
Actually, Modi is an “uneducated religious demagogue” unfit for the Prime Minister’s position, whose success is not a result of political acumen or genuine public support, but of electoral fraud and the creation of fake narratives around issues like the Pulwama attack or “Modi’s guarantees.”
However, the opposition itself is criticized for being naive in their approach. Despite understanding the alleged ploys of Modi and the BJP, their protests often lack the sustained momentum needed to create a significant impact.
Without mobilizing the public, particularly students, for perpetual street protests, much like the Anna Hazare, anti-CAA, and farmers’ movements that previously captured the nation’s attention, opposition parties may find themselves unable to defeat the ruling regime.
This is a battle that, according to the opposition’s own logic, can only be won on the streets.
