New Delhi, India – A growing storm of protest is sweeping across India as opposition Members of Parliament and activists unite to accuse Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of pervasive “vote theft“, labeling him a “Vote Chor” (Vote Thief). These powerful allegations claim that the BJP has secured successive electoral victories, including recent Lok Sabha and state elections, through manipulative means and widespread fraud.
The “Vote Chori” campaign, spearheaded by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, asserts that the Prime Minister and the BJP have engaged in a range of fraudulent practices to manipulate election outcomes. Critics contend that these alleged activities are so fundamental to the BJP’s success that without them, Modi and the BJP would be unable to win any elections.
Key allegations leveled by the opposition include:
- Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) Manipulation: A central accusation is the alleged tampering with EVMs to alter results. Rahul Gandhi has repeatedly accused PM Modi of manipulating EVMs to secure his position.
- Fudged Electoral Rolls: Opposition parties claim that electoral rolls have been manipulated to facilitate fraudulent voting.
- Declaration of Fake Results: Critics allege that election results have been falsely declared.
- Voter Bribery and Threats: The BJP is accused of using bribes and threats to influence voters.
- Destabilization of State Governments: Allegations also include enticing rival MLAs to defect to destabilize elected state governments.

A significant symbolic protest took place in Uttar Pradesh on August 13, 2025, where Samajwadi Party (SP) workers declared Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Ajay Rai the “real MP from Varanasi”. This action followed Rai’s public claims that the BJP manipulated the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in Varanasi to ensure Modi’s victory. Protesters asserted that Prime Minister Modi had actually lost the election by 150,000 votes but was forcibly declared the winner by election officials, asserting Ajay Rai, not Narendra Modi, is Varanasi’s true representative.
The opposition’s campaign, a joint effort by Congress and other parties, seeks to highlight what they describe as election thefts carried out by the BJP in collusion with the Election Commission of India (ECI). Despite facing these countrywide protests and the “Vote Chor” label, Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered a speech on India’s 79th Independence Day.
Critics point to widespread public suffering from unemployment, poverty, corruption, and inflation as evidence that public sentiment is against the current government, further fueling their belief that the BJP’s victories are fraudulent.
Concerns are high that these serious allegations may remain unresolved, as critics claim that crucial institutions like the Supreme Court, ECI, and Parliament are “defunct” and unlikely to conduct a proper investigation. This has led the opposition to believe that Modi and the BJP will continue to win elections at will, with Modi potentially continuing his tenure as the “Vote Chor” PM.
