NEW DELHI – Despite facing the label of “Vote Chor” (Vote Thief) and countrywide protests, Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered a speech on India’s 79th Independence Day today. His address comes amid a growing campaign by the opposition, led by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, alleging that the Prime Minister and his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have stolen elections through various fraudulent means.
According to critics, the BJP’s electoral victories, including the recent Lok Sabha and several state elections, are a result of widespread election fraud. These allegations include electronic voting machine (EVM) manipulation, fudged electoral rolls, and the declaration of fake results. Opposition parties also claim that the BJP uses bribes and threats to influence voters and to destabilize elected state governments by enticing rival MLAs to defect.

Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, has been at the forefront of the opposition’s “Vote Chori” campaign. He has repeatedly accused Prime Minister Modi of stealing votes and manipulating EVMs to secure his position, labeling him a “Vote Chor.” This campaign is a joint effort by Congress and other opposition parties to highlight what they describe as election thefts carried out by the BJP in collusion with the Election Commission of India (ECI).

A powerful symbolic protest took place in Uttar Pradesh on August 13, 2025, where Samajwadi Party (SP) workers declared Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Ajay Rai the “real MP from Varanasi.” This action followed Rai’s public allegations that the BJP manipulated the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in Varanasi to ensure Modi’s victory. Protesters asserted that Prime Minister Modi had actually lost the election by 150,000 votes but was forcibly declared the winner by election officials. For the protesters, Ajay Rai, not Narendra Modi, is the true representative of Varanasi.
Critics argue that without these alleged fraudulent practices—including EVM manipulation, electoral roll frauds, and voter bribery—Modi and the BJP could not win any elections. They cite the widespread public suffering from unemployment, poverty, corruption, and inflation as evidence that the public sentiment is against the current government.
The allegations are expected to remain unresolved as critics claim that institutions like the Supreme Court, ECI, and Parliament are “defunct” and will not conduct a proper investigation. As a result, the opposition believes that Modi and the BJP will continue to win elections at will, and Modi will continue to serve as the “Vote Chor” PM.
