Trump Hosts Ukraine-Russia Peace Summit; Putin, Zelensky Open to Direct Talks

President Trump stated that he discussed security guarantees for Ukraine, which Putin reportedly agreed to, though Kyiv’s aspiration to join the NATO alliance was ruled out.

Washington D.C. – August 18 – A significant step towards de-escalation in the Ukraine conflict was taken today as US President Donald Trump hosted fast-moving talks aimed at a peace summit between Russian and Ukrainian leaders. The diplomatic efforts culminated in Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressing readiness for bilateral talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, with the Kremlin also indicating Putin’s openness to the “idea” of direct engagement.

The day began with President Trump meeting President Zelensky and a contingent of European leaders to address the critical issue of long-term security guarantees for Kyiv. Following these discussions, Trump engaged in a phone call with President Putin.

Key developments from the summit include:

  • Security Guarantees for Ukraine: President Trump stated that he discussed security guarantees for Ukraine, which Putin reportedly agreed to, though Kyiv’s aspiration to join the NATO alliance was ruled out. Trump clarified these guarantees “would be provided by the various European Countries, with a coordination with the United States of America”. President Zelensky emphasized that security guarantees are a “key issue, a starting point towards ending the war” and expressed appreciation for the “important signal from the United States regarding its readiness to support and be part of these guarantees”.
  • Zelensky’s Perspective: In a tweet, President Zelensky described his conversation with President Trump as “long and detailed,” covering topics such as the “situation on the battlefield and our steps to bring peace closer”. He confirmed participating in “several meetings in a format with European leaders and the President of the United States”.
  • Humanitarian Issues: A significant portion of today’s discussions was dedicated to humanitarian concerns, specifically “the return of our children, to the release of prisoners of war and civilians held by Russia,” with an agreement to work on these matters.
  • Leaders-Level Meeting Supported: The US President also supported a meeting at the level of leaders, which President Zelensky deemed “necessary to resolve sensitive issues”.
  • Demonstration of Unity: President Zelensky expressed gratitude to President Trump for the invitation and the meeting’s special format, also thanking the European leaders present, including:

    • Friedrich Merz
    • Giorgia Meloni
    • Alexander Stubb
    • Ursula von der Leyen
    • Mark Rutte

Zelensky hailed the day as an “important step, a demonstration of genuine unity between Europe and the United States,” asserting that the leaders’ personal attendance underscored their support for Ukraine and their commitment to finding “real peace” and a “reliable security architecture” for Ukraine and Europe. Efforts to coordinate steps with allies to “end this war with dignity” will continue.
