A highly anticipated summit between US President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, has concluded without an agreement to end Moscow’s war in Ukraine, though President Trump stated that “great progress” had been made in their talks in Alaska.
Observers noted that the meeting offered Russian President Vladimir Putin a “diplomatic win” after years of being isolated by Western nations following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Despite the high-level discussions, the conflict continued unabated, with eastern Ukrainian regions experiencing air raid alerts and parts of Russia’s Rostov and Bryansk regions reporting Ukrainian drone attacks.
Following the summit, President Trump, in an interview with Fox TV, advised Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to “make a deal” to end the war, acknowledging Russia as “a very big power”. Trump also indicated that Zelenskyy and Putin were expected to arrange a meeting to pursue a ceasefire. He emphasized that it was “really up to President Zelenskyy to get it done” and urged European nations to get involved. Trump also offered to be present at their next meeting.

In his initial public comments after the Alaska talks, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed support for President Trump’s proposal for a trilateral meeting involving Ukraine, the United States, and Russia, affirming Kyiv’s “readiness for constructive cooperation”. Zelenskyy posted on X that Ukraine “reaffirms its readiness to work with maximum effort to achieve peace”. He underscored that a “real peace must be achieved, one that will be lasting, not just another pause between Russian invasions”.
Zelenskyy further articulated Ukraine’s core demands and conditions for peace:
- Killings must cease as soon as possible, with an immediate halt to fire on the battlefield, in the sky, and against port infrastructure.
- All Ukrainian prisoners of war and civilians must be released, and children abducted by Russia must be returned, as thousands remain in captivity.
- Pressure on Russia must be maintained as long as aggression and occupation continue.
- Sanctions should be strengthened if a trilateral meeting does not occur or if Russia attempts to evade an honest end to the war, highlighting sanctions as an effective tool.
- Security must be reliably guaranteed in the long term, with the involvement of both Europe and the U.S..
- All issues important to Ukraine, particularly territorial ones, must be discussed with Ukraine’s participation and cannot be decided without Ukraine.
Zelenskyy concluded by thanking partners who are providing assistance and highlighted an “important statement from European leaders that strengthens our position,” affirming continued joint efforts with Europeans, Americans, and others globally who desire peace and stability in international relations.
