August 27, 2025 – US President Donald Trump has once again claimed he prevented a nuclear war between India and Pakistan by threatening crippling tariffs and halting trade deals, an assertion subtly refuted by Indian officials. Speaking during a cabinet meeting at the White House, Trump described his intervention as pivotal in de-escalating tensions between New Delhi and Islamabad.
Trump stated that he engaged in a conversation with “a very terrific man, Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi,” asking about the ongoing conflict with Pakistan. He highlighted the “tremendous” hatred and the historical nature of the dispute, stating it had continued for “hundreds of years”.
Trump recounted issuing a direct warning to PM Modi: “I said, I don’t want to make a trade deal with you… You guys are going to end up in a nuclear war… I said, “Call me back tomorrow, but we’re not going to do any deals with you, or we’re going to put tariffs on you that are so high, your head’s going to spin.”

According to Trump, both sides “backed down” within five hours of this conversation. He also reiterated his claim that the conflict had led to the downing of multiple military aircraft, specifically mentioning “150 million dollar planes were shot down, a lot of them – seven, maybe it could be higher,” although he provided no evidence or official sources. Trump further drew a parallel with the Russia-Ukraine war, suggesting the India-Pakistan situation held the potential to escalate into a global crisis.
Despite Trump’s repeated claims of intervention, India has vaguely denied any third-party involvement in the de-escalation without directly refuting Trump’s claims. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh previously stated that the ceasefire was a result of India’s own strategic decisions and not external pressure. Furthermore, on July 29, PM Modi made a statement about the India-Pakistan conflict in Parliament, while Modi’s assertions were full of lies.
