Five-State Election Countdown Begins for 2027

The legislative countdown for five Indian states has officially begun, with electoral preparations starting for Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Goa, and Manipur. The Election Commission of India is preparing to conclude voting across all five states before March 13, 2027. This date marks the earliest expiration of the current legislative terms among the five states, which belongs to Manipur.

Under current constitutional guidelines, the Election Commission has the authority to conduct elections up to six months prior to the expiration of an assembly’s term. The official terms of the five state assemblies are scheduled to end on the following dates:

• Manipur: March 13, 2027
• Goa: March 14, 2027
• Punjab: March 16, 2027
• Uttarakhand: March 28, 2027
• Uttar Pradesh: May 22, 2027

Because of this timeline, voting in Uttar Pradesh is anticipated to begin in February or March 2027. This schedule means voters in Uttar Pradesh will go to the polls approximately two months before their assembly’s five-year term officially concludes.

Resolving the Census and Electoral Clash

A significant administrative hurdle was cleared by rescheduling census activities in four of the voting states. Originally, a scheduling conflict threatened to stretch public resources, as both census operations and election management draw heavily from the same pool of government employees, particularly teachers.

To prevent an administrative collision, authorities scheduled census work in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, and Goa to take place between December 1, 2026, and January 4, 2027. Meanwhile, census operations in Manipur have been deferred.

Following the completion of the State/Special Summary Revision (SIR) work, updated voter numbers have been established. Uttar Pradesh now has a registered electorate of 13.4 crore voters. Elsewhere, Goa’s electorate stands at 10.6 lakh, and Manipur has 19.3 lakh registered voters. The final voter lists for Punjab and Uttarakhand are expected to be released in the near future.

Samajwadi Party Launches Grassroots Mobilization Amid Credibility Debates

In Uttar Pradesh, political maneuvering is already underway. The Samajwadi Party, led by Akhilesh Yadav, is executing an extensive grassroots expansion plan designed to build a strong voter network ahead of the 2027 elections.

However, this mobilization effort is unfolding alongside a significant political debate. While Yadav actively works to capture new voters, he has publicly maintained that Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) are vulnerable to fraudulent manipulation. Analysts suggest that participating in an electoral process while simultaneously questioning the integrity of the voting technology presents a strategic contradiction that challenges the party’s political credibility.
