LOS ANGELES, CA – The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences successfully held the 16th Governors Awards at the Ray Dolby Ballroom in Hollywood on Sunday, November 16, 2025. The event, which uses the Governors Awards and the Scientific and Technical Awards as methods of recognizing and celebrating the arts and sciences of moviemaking, helps kick off the Academy’s 98th Oscars events.

Oscar statuettes were presented to the four honorees. The ceremony was hosted by Will Arnett, following a welcome delivered by Academy President Lynette Howell Taylor.

Honorees and Presenters

The recipients of the Honorary Awards, given for extraordinary distinction in lifetime achievement, exceptional contributions to the state of motion picture arts and sciences, or outstanding service to the Academy, were Debbie Allen, Tom Cruise, and Wynn Thomas.

Specific presenters were announced for each recipient:

  • Debbie Allen received her Honorary Award, which is an Oscar statuette, presented by Cynthia Erivo.
  • Tom Cruise received his Honorary Award, presented by Alejandro González Iñárritu.
  • Wynn Thomas received his Honorary Award, presented by Octavia Spencer.

Additionally, Dolly Parton was presented with the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award. This award is also an Oscar statuette. It is bestowed upon an individual in the motion picture arts and sciences whose humanitarian efforts have “brought credit to the industry by promoting human welfare and contributing to rectifying inequities”. The award is given for efforts that promote human welfare and contribute to rectifying inequities.

Dolly Parton’s award was presented by Lily Tomlin. It should be noted that Dolly Parton’s acceptance of the Governors Award was recorded in Nashville.

Production and Context

The event was produced by Oscar-nominated producer Jennifer Fox. This marks the seventh time Fox has produced the esteemed event, having produced the Academy’s last six consecutive Governors Awards. Academy President Lynette Howell Taylor praised Fox’s “expertise in producing the Governors Awards” as “unmatched”.

Fox expressed that it is “always an honor to produce this joyous and esteemed Academy event” and that she looked forward to helping pay tribute to the incredible achievements of all four honorees. Fox’s extensive film credits include Michael Clayton (which earned seven Oscar nominations), Syriana, and The Last Duel.

The awards, which are all Oscar statuettes, were voted on by the Academy’s Board of Governors this past June. The 16th Governors Awards were presented in partnership with Rolex, which serves as the Exclusive Watch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

This event showcases the breadth of talent recognized by the Academy, honoring those who have not only achieved cinematic excellence (like the Honorary Award recipients) but also those who use their platform to champion social good (like the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award recipient). The four honorees celebrated at the Governors Awards serve as the guiding stars recognized before the main Oscars broadcast, much like an advance scout recognizing crucial landmarks before the full expedition begins.
