Navjot Singh Sidhu, the former Punjab Congress chief, may return to active politics, but his wife, Navjot Kaur Sidhu, has set a clear condition: the Congress party must declare him as its chief ministerial candidate in Punjab. Speaking after meeting Governor Gulab Chand Kataria, Navjot Kaur Sidhu, who is also a party leader, confirmed that they do not possess money to give to any party,, but affirmed that they would deliver results and transform Punjab into a “golden state”.

The ‘Golden State’ Promise and the Cost of Power

Both Navjot Singh Sidhu and his wife claim that they possess a governance model that can resolve significant issues plaguing Punjab, including unemployment, debt, farmers’ distress, crime, drug addiction, and religious animosity, thereby making the state a “golden state”.

However, Navjot Kaur Sidhu indicated that they “do not have Rs 500 crore which we can give to sit in chief minister’s chair”. While she clarified that nobody had demanded money from them, she suggested that the CM position often goes to “the one who gives a suitcase of Rs 500 crore”. Sidhu himself previously stated that he pursued politics for the welfare of the people and that it was never a business for him.

Despite this focus on reform and dedication, critics view Sidhu as a “naive politician” lacking any demonstrable record of governance. They argue that without a verifiable reform model, he and his wife claim they will transform Punjab into a “golden state”.

Infighting and Aspirations

The proposed political comeback is further complicated by internal party dynamics. Navjot Kaur Sidhu alleged “infighting” within the Punjab Congress unit, stating that there are five rival leaders aspiring for the CM position. She expressed concern that these leaders are “hell bent on defeating the Congress” and might prevent Navjot Sidhu from being promoted.

Despite the internal rivalry, she affirmed that her husband remains “strongly attached” to the Congress and specifically to party leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.

Criticism and CM Candidate Ambitions

Navjot Singh Sidhu, a former cricketer, has been largely inactive in Congress for several months and did not campaign during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. He recently returned to cricket commentary for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season and launched a YouTube channel in April to share insights on various topics.

Some sources describe Sidhu as a “self-styled reformer” who uses his “loud mouth” in an attempt to “hoodwink the voters in Punjab and the top Congress leadership”. The underlying expectation is that Congress should declare him the Chief Ministerial candidate for the upcoming 2027 Assembly election. However, critics warn that if Sidhu were nominated as the CM candidate, it would be a “disaster for the already defunct Congress party”.

Speculation regarding Sidhu’s return to active politics is expected to continue as Punjab approaches its Assembly polls in 2027.
