The European Film Market (EFM), set to run from February 12 to 18, 2026, as a key component of the 76th Berlinale, has announced a major program expansion featuring new strategic partnerships and a continued emphasis on innovation. This comprehensive expansion aims to meet the evolving needs of the global audiovisual industry.

Festival Director Tricia Tuttle emphasized the EFM team’s work as an absolutely vital part of the Berlinale, supporting film businesses that ensure cultural cinema reaches audiences worldwide. Annually, the EFM attracts tens of thousands of professionals from more than 130 countries to Berlin. The EFM is part of Berlinale Pro, which also includes the Berlinale Co-Production Market, Berlinale Talents, and the World Cinema Fund.

New Clusters: EFM Beyond and Animation Days

The 2026 edition introduces two significant new program clusters:

  1. EFM Beyond: This strategic platform is dedicated to cross-media collaboration and innovative market strategies. EFM Beyond focuses on future-facing creativity where film, animation, gaming, and related creative sectors like story-based XR converge. The program targets producers with practice-oriented upskilling workshops, including how to create new revenue streams by expanding intellectual property (IP) across multiple media. It will also feature a Cross-IP accelerator organized in partnership with the Annecy International Animation Film Festival and SpielFabrique. The EFM Innovation Hub will continue to be the central venue for exhibiting cutting-edge production tools and technologies.
  2. EFM Animation Days: Running from February 12–14, the first edition of the EFM Animation Days marks a major expansion of the Market’s portfolio. This three-day program will bring together global animation creatives, buyers, studios, financiers, and producers for curated showcases, networking, and workshops. Tanja Meissner, Berlinale Pro Director, highlighted this initiative as vital for championing the highly creative and dynamic European animation sector, which provides a world-class pipeline ready for export. The Animation Days are supported by MDM Mitteldeutsche Medienförderung.

Strategic Market and Talent Platforms

The EFM will host several key initiatives focused on business development and talent cultivation:

  • EFM Startups Programme: The twelfth edition will introduce ten international media-tech entrepreneurs presenting solutions spanning production, rights management, distribution, and audience engagement. The EFM plays a distinctive role as the only market where startups are highlighted in their own dedicated section, allowing them to gain traction.
  • Investors Forum: Following the success of its pilot format, the Forum will assemble premier media and film finance leaders for high-level exchanges and peer-to-peer dialogue. This provides a unique context for investors seeking to understand current developments between private and public funding.
  • Berlinale Film School Summit: A new initiative for 2026 on February 17, the summit will host up to 100 producing and directing students from leading film schools globally. Participants will gain exclusive access to the Berlinale Pro universe, masterclasses, and networking formats designed to strengthen early international collaboration.

Series, Documentaries, and Regional Focus

The market will also feature enhanced content platforms:

  • Berlinale Series Market (BSM): Returning from February 15-18 with an expanded lineup, the BSM introduces Series Match, a new initiative with Iberseries & Platino Industria that connects German and Ibero-American producers working on early-stage series projects. The BSM will also introduce “Series Talks” at the CinemaxX lounge.
  • DocSalon & Archive Market: The widely acclaimed networking platform for nonfiction professionals will return, with the Archive Market (Feb 17) focusing on archival research, restored classics, and heritage re-releases. New this year, the DocSalon will include a special focus on animated documentaries as part of the EFM Animation Days.
  • Country in Focus 2026: This year, the focus will spotlight Morocco, highlighting its production landscape and exceptional co-production potential. The EFM will provide curated networking events and pitching sessions to draw attention to this dynamic creative country in the MENA region.
  • New Works in Progress (WIP) and pitching sessions include the EFM Far East in Progress selection and EFM Frontières Focus, which will highlight five bold and innovative international genre projects in advanced financing or early post-production.

The main EFM Conference Programme will run from February 13 to 16, featuring four days of talks, masterclasses, and panel discussions exploring innovative business models, market consolidation, and emerging trends shaping global filmmaking. Support for the various EFM programs is provided by partners including Creative Europe MEDIA, FFF Bayern, Film- und Medienstiftung NRW, and MDM Mitteldeutsche Medienförderung.
