EU Hits Pause Button on US Counter-Tariffs for 90 Days Following American Tariff Delay

The decision to temporarily suspend the tariffs underscores the EU’s willingness to engage in dialogue and seek a resolution to trade tensions with the United States.

Brussels: The European Union (EU) has announced its decision to put a planned package of counter-tariffs on goods from the United States on hold for a period of 90 days. This move comes in the wake of a U-turn by US President Donald Trump on imposing massive duties, offering a window for potential trade negotiations.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen made the announcement on Thursday, stating that the bloc would suspend the countermeasures “to give negotiations a chance”. She further elaborated, “While finalising the adoption of the EU countermeasures that saw strong support from our Member States, we will put them on hold for 90 days”. This indicates a unified stance among EU nations in their response to potential US tariffs.

The decision to temporarily suspend the tariffs underscores the EU’s willingness to engage in dialogue and seek a resolution to trade tensions with the United States. Von der Leyen made it clear, however, that this suspension is conditional. “If negotiations are not satisfactory, our countermeasures will kick in,” she warned. This sets a clear timeframe and consequence, maintaining pressure on the US to engage in meaningful discussions.

The EU had finalised the adoption of these countermeasures, suggesting they were prepared to implement them swiftly had the US tariffs proceeded. The 90-day pause reflects a strategic decision to de-escalate the immediate threat of a trade war and explore diplomatic avenues.
