Islamabad has announced its intention to nominate U.S. President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, citing what it describes as his “decisive diplomatic intervention” in facilitating a ceasefire between India and Pakistan in May 2025.
According to a BBC report of June 21, the Pakistani government stated on X that Trump deserved the award “in recognition of his decisive diplomatic intervention and pivotal leadership during the recent India-Pakistan crisis”. They further elaborated that President Trump “demonstrated great strategic foresight and stellar statesmanship through robust diplomatic engagement with both Islamabad and New Delhi,” which reportedly “de-escalated a rapidly deteriorating situation”. This intervention, Pakistan contends, “stands as a testament to his role as a genuine peacemaker”.
The ceasefire, which occurred in May 2025, followed a deadly terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir, leading to four days of intense fighting between the nuclear-armed nations. President Trump has publicly claimed credit for brokering this ceasefire, stating his administration played a “pivotal role” in de-escalating hostilities.
He also mentioned that he told India and Pakistan that a ceasefire was necessary for them to maintain trade with the U.S.. While Pakistan has corroborated the U.S. statements regarding the brokered ceasefire, India has denied that the U.S. served as a mediator to end the conflict, asserting it does not desire diplomatic intervention from a third party.
Beyond the ceasefire, the U.S. has also signaled its interest in facilitating a permanent resolution to the decades-old Kashmir conflict, one of the world’s most enduring territorial disputes. Resolving this complex issue, which involves both India and Pakistan claiming the region in full while controlling it in parts, along with the unresolved aspirations of the Kashmiri people, would require navigating significant political, military, and humanitarian complexities. Trump’s reported aim to resolve the Kashmir dispute could significantly bolster his chances for the Nobel Peace Prize, a goal he has publicly discussed in previous years.

For the Kashmiri people, particularly the majority Muslim communities, who have experienced what many describe as an “open-air prison” with systematically denied civil liberties since the revocation of Article 370 in 2019, Trump’s intervention offers a rare focus of international attention.
Human rights advocates emphasize that for peace to be meaningful, it must address the rights and aspirations of the Kashmiri people, including the demilitarization of civilian spaces, an end to collective punishment and mass surveillance, and the restoration of democratic freedoms.
If Trump succeeds in brokering a “just and sustainable peace” that places “human rights at its core,” it could be seen as a significant achievement worthy of the Nobel Peace Prize. Previous Nobel Peace Prize recipients for peace-building efforts include Barack Obama, Jimmy Carter, Nelson Mandela, and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.
