WASHINGTON D.C. – U.S. President Donald Trump has asserted his role in averting a war between India and Pakistan, attributing the success partly to the influence of Pakistan’s Army Chief General Asim Munir. Trump’s remarks followed a lunch invitation on June 18 for Munir at the White House. During the visit, a White House official stated that Munir called for Trump to be nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts in preventing a nuclear war between India and Pakistan.
Trump explicitly stated the reason for his meeting with General Munir, saying, “I wanted to thank him for not going into the war and ending it”. He further elaborated on the conflict, noting that India and Pakistan are “two big nuclear powers” that were “going at it”. Trump claimed, “I stopped a war between Pakistan and India,” and credited Munir as “extremely influential in stopping it, from the Pakistan side”. He also acknowledged Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s influence “from the India side”.

Despite Trump’s claim of intervention, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had reportedly clarified on June 18 that a May ceasefire between India and Pakistan was a result of bilateral military discussions, not U.S. involvement.
Beyond the peace efforts, Trump also highlighted ongoing diplomatic engagements, mentioning discussions to secure trade deals with both India and Pakistan. He stated, “Prime Minister Modi just left a little while ago and we are working a trade deal with India and also with Pakistan… I am so happy. Two very smart people decided not to keep going with the war”.
Trump reiterated his stance on Wednesday (June 18) on the sidelines of a White House event, saying, “I love Pakistan. I think Modi is a fantastic man. I spoke to him last night”.
