The public dispute intensified after Donald Trump criticized Elon Musk, asserting that the Tesla CEO heavily relies on American government subsidies. Trump claimed that without these subsidies, Musk would likely “head back home to South Africa” and would have to “close up shop”, ending rocket launches, satellite ventures, and electric car production. Trump also stated that he was “strongly against the EV Mandate” long before Musk endorsed him for President, calling it “ridiculous”. Furthermore, Trump suggested that DOGE (Department of Government Efficiency), which Musk once led, should investigate the extent of subsidies flowing to Musk’s companies.
In response, Elon Musk condemned Trump’s “big, beautiful bill,” describing it as “political suicide for the Republican Party”. Musk also threatened to launch a new political party, “the America Party,” if the spending bill passed in the US Senate, stating that the country needs an alternative to the “Democrat-Republican uniparty” to give people a voice.
This ongoing dispute highlights contrasting views on government support and political direction between the former President and the billionaire CEO.
