10 Manufacturing Areas Indian SMBs Must Explore Amid Rising US Tariffs and Visa Restrictions

While tariff barriers and visa restrictions from the US are creating hurdles, they also highlight the need for Indian SMBs to be self-reliant and globally competitive.

Indian businesses are facing a tough external environment. The United States has imposed higher tariffs on Indian exports—notably a 25% levy on several goods—while also tightening visa rules for Indian professionals and entrepreneurs. These measures make it harder for Indian firms to stay competitive in traditional markets like the US, while also restricting their ability to expand operations abroad.

In this scenario, it becomes imperative for Indian small- and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) to diversify their focus and explore new manufacturing areas that cater both to the growing domestic demand and alternative export markets.

Here are 10 manufacturing areas that Indian SMBs must explore:

1. Renewable Energy Equipment ⚡🌱

India’s clean energy transition is accelerating, with solar panels, wind turbines, and bio-energy systems in high demand. SMBs can manufacture components like inverters, batteries, and small-scale renewable kits for rural markets and exports.

2. Electric Vehicles (EVs) and Components 🚗🔋

With the Indian government pushing EV adoption, SMBs can focus on batteries, charging infrastructure, lightweight vehicle components, and retrofitting kits for two- and three-wheelers.

3. Medical Devices and Health Tech 🏥🩺

Affordable diagnostic tools, wearables, and hospital equipment are under-supplied in India. Export demand is also rising from developing countries seeking low-cost alternatives to Western devices.

4. Agri-Tech Machinery 🌾🚜

From smart irrigation systems to compact harvesters, technology-driven farming tools are essential for India’s agriculture-heavy economy. These products also find buyers in other agrarian nations.

5. Food Processing and Packaging 🍎🥫

As India’s middle class expands, processed foods and ready-to-eat products are booming. SMBs can enter manufacturing of cold storage equipment, hygienic packaging materials, and processed food items for export.

6. Textiles with Smart & Sustainable Focus 👗♻️

India is a textile giant, but SMBs can differentiate with sustainable fabrics, smart textiles (wearables integrated with sensors), and organic clothing for premium global markets.

7. Pharmaceutical Intermediates & Nutraceuticals 💊🌿

Beyond generics, SMBs can focus on active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), herbal supplements, and wellness products, where India has a natural cost advantage.

8. Consumer Electronics & Smart Appliances 📱🏠

Rising domestic demand for affordable smartphones, IoT-enabled devices, and home automation tools provides a fertile ground for SMB manufacturing units.

9. Defense and Security Equipment 🛡️🔧

The government’s Make in India in Defense initiative opens opportunities for SMBs in drones, surveillance systems, protective gear, and non-lethal defense technology.

10. Green Construction Materials 🧱🏗️

Eco-friendly cement, recycled steel, prefabricated housing units, and energy-efficient insulation materials will see demand as India urbanizes and exports to sustainability-focused markets.

The Path Forward

While tariff barriers and visa restrictions from the US are creating hurdles, they also highlight the need for Indian SMBs to be self-reliant and globally competitive. By focusing on innovation, sustainability, and new-age sectors, small businesses can expand into domestic growth areas while exploring alternative export markets in Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

As part of this transition, SMBs can also leverage platforms like Pathway by RMN Company, which provides content and visibility solutions to help small businesses innovate, promote, and grow in a challenging global environment.
