Crisis at the Panth: SGPC Demands Bhagwant Mann’s Resignation Over Disputed Video

The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has formally demanded Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s resignation, asserting he has lost the moral right to govern after the Akal Takht declared him “Guru Dokhi.” This escalation follows forensic reports from two reputed laboratories that dismantled the CM’s “AI-generated” defense, exposing what appears to be a strategic stalling tactic by the Chief Minister’s Office during high-level religious inquiries.

The January 15 Recording: A Breakdown of the Secret Meeting

In the high-stakes ecclesiastical-political impasse of Punjab, transparency between the state executive and the Akal Takht—the highest temporal seat of the Sikhs—is not merely a protocol but a requirement for social stability. The current crisis reached a fever pitch following the release of a recording from a January 15 meeting at the Akal Takht secretariat, a session intended to resolve the authenticity of a highly objectionable video allegedly featuring the Chief Minister.

The recording captures a tense exchange between the officiating Jathedar Giani Kuldip Singh Gargaj, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, and his personal assistant, Rajbir Singh Ghuman. While Mann repeatedly characterized the footage as “fake” and offered to undergo forensic testing, the investigation highlights a significant “gotcha” moment: Mann attempted to leverage a court order as a shield, claiming it had already vindicated him. However, the Jathedar’s direct review of the document exposed a lack of any forensic direction, effectively neutralizing the CM’s judicial defense.

The forensic reports from two reputed labs didn’t just find the video genuine—they dismantled the Chief Minister’s primary digital defense, shifting this conflict from social media speculation to a direct challenge of his moral and religious accountability.

The investigative “smoking gun” lies in the subsequent silence from the CMO. During the meeting, Gargaj specifically requested that Mann suggest the names of two reputed forensic laboratories to conduct an independent audit. The SGPC now alleges that the government went silent, failing to provide any lab names—a move seen by critics as a strategic stalling tactic that ultimately backfired when the Akal Takht proceeded with its own independent forensic verification.

The Technical Battle: AI Allegations vs. Forensic Reality

In the modern theater of political disinformation, the “AI defense” has become a ubiquitous shield for officials caught in digital scandals. Chief Minister Mann leaned heavily on this narrative, suggesting that social media’s capacity for deepfakes was being weaponized against him. However, this defense did more than just fail; it served as the singular catalyst that transformed a social media scandal into a terminal religious crisis.

By declaring Mann ‘Guru Dokhi,’ the Akal Takht has moved beyond political disagreement. As SGPC President Dhami asserts, the CM has lost the ‘moral right’ to rule, as the Panthic leadership now seeks to mobilize his own voters against him through the ‘People’s Court’ strategy.

The technical “So What?” is clear: the forensic findings did not just suggest the video was genuine; they systematically dismantled a sitting Chief Minister’s primary digital defense strategy. SGPC President Harjinder Singh Dhami revealed that two reputed laboratories found no evidence of tampering or artificial intelligence manipulation.

The Chief Minister’s specific defenses, as documented in the recording, included:

  • The “Jagman” Character Assassination: Mann claimed the clip was circulated by an individual named Jagman, whom he labeled a habitual drug user and blackmailer.
  • Opposition Manipulation: The CM speculated that the video could have been fabricated using photos of opposition leaders such as Sukhbir Badal or Bikram Singh Majithia.
  • Misrepresented Judicial Precedent: Mann asserted that existing court orders had already validated his claim that the video was false, a claim later debunked by the Jathedar.

With the digital shield of “Artificial Intelligence” shattered by forensic reality, the battleground shifted from the technical to the theological.

Religious Sanctions: “Guru Dokhi” and the Social Boycott

To be declared “Guru Dokhi” (anti-Guru) or “Khalsa Panth Virodhi” (opposed to the Khalsa Panth) is not an academic label; it represents the total removal of moral authority in the eyes of the Panth. Such a declaration by the Akal Takht strips a leader of their legitimacy within the socio-political fabric of Punjab, effectively excommunicating their political standing.

Following the forensic confirmation, the SGPC passed a formal resolution stating Mann has forfeited the moral right to hold office. The SGPC is now operationalizing this religious censure through a “People’s Court” strategy, designed to threaten the CM’s political survival:

  • Constituency-Level Mobilization: SGPC members are scheduled to hold meetings in every constituency, taking the “Guru Dokhi” declaration directly to the CM’s own voters to exert religious pressure.
  • General House Meeting: A decisive meeting is set for June 27 to solidify the Panthic response.
  • Moral Sanction: By backing the Akal Takht’s call for a social boycott, the SGPC is utilizing Sikh traditions and maryada to isolate Mann from his core community support.

Political Counter-Offensive: AAP’s Response and Allegations of Conspiracy

For the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), this crisis represents an existential threat to its image in Punjab. The party has launched a vigorous counter-offensive, attempting to pivot the narrative from a religious mandate back to a partisan conspiracy.

Baltej Pannu, a senior AAP leader and media in-charge, argued that the released recording actually vindicates the CM. Pannu asserts that the footage proves Mann never denied an investigation and was the first to call for forensic scrutiny. The party’s defense rests on the premise that the video is a politically motivated fabrication designed to defame the Chief Minister.

To combat the “Guru Dokhi” tag, AAP has organized district-level protests across the state, explicitly accusing the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) of orchestrating the campaign. By framing the video as a tool of political malice rather than a religious transgression, AAP is fighting to prevent the moral authority of the Akal Takht from translating into a loss of the secular mandate.
