National Geographic has officially announced the premiere date and trailer for Super Scam Me, a one-hour investigative documentary special featuring Emmy Award-winning journalist Mariana van Zeller. Produced by Muck Media and directed by Jeff Plunkett, the special premieres on October 17 at 9:00 p.m. EDT on National Geographic and will stream simultaneously on Disney+ and Hulu.

Romance scams have escalated into one of the fastest-growing and most financially ruinous forms of cybercrime. According to industry statistics highlighted in the special, an estimated one in seven adults has lost money to romance deception. In 2025 alone, romance fraudsters stole more than $1 billion from American victims.

The Rising Threat of AI-Driven Financial Fraud

The rapid proliferation of generative artificial intelligence tools has significantly heightened the sophistication of online relationship fraud. Cybercriminals increasingly leverage advanced AI models to imitate public figures, high-ranking military officials, and celebrities, creating hyper-realistic digital personas that deceive unsuspecting individuals across social media and dating platforms.

In Super Scam Me, van Zeller turns the tables on these bad actors by constructing a new online dating persona and positioning herself as an active target. This social experiment provides an unprecedented look inside the tactical playbooks, technological tools, and psychological manipulation techniques utilized by international fraud rings.

Undercover Tracking and On-the-Ground Confrontation

As the undercover operation unfolds, van Zeller zeroes in on a particularly manipulative scammer who claims to be a four-star military general.
