(Rawalpindi, Pakistan) – Former Prime Minister Imran Khan, currently incarcerated in Adiala Jail, issued a strong call for national unity during a conversation with his lawyers on May 22, 2025, held in the makeshift courtroom inside the jail. Mr. Khan articulated three primary reasons why the nation urgently needs unity at this critical juncture.
Firstly, Mr. Khan warned that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, following a recent “embarrassment” during India-Pakistan tensions, “will surely strike again to compensate for that humiliation”. This statement comes amid heightened tensions between the two countries, particularly after India launched “Operation Sindoor” on May 7.
This operation followed a deadly terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam on April 22, 2025, which resulted in 26 fatalities. The Indian government accused Pakistan of involvement in the attack, but Pakistan has vehemently rejected these accusations as unsubstantiated. Khan had previously cautioned the Shehbaz Sharif government to be prepared for another potential Indian attack.
Secondly, Khan highlighted the security situation within Pakistan, stating that “innocent people are being martyred daily in terrorist incidents in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan”.
Thirdly, he pointed to the dire economic situation, noting that “the economy is in complete collapse, and investors and youth are continuously moving abroad”.
Mr. Khan, a 72-year-old cricketer-turned-politician who served as Pakistan’s prime minister from 2018 to 2022 before his removal from office, has been in jail since August 2023 in multiple cases. He has been held in Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi since 2023, currently serving a three-year sentence following a conviction in a corruption case. He faces approximately 150 charges in total, which his party asserts are politically motivated.
Regarding his current situation, Khan denied rumors of a deal being made with him, stating, “No deal has taken place, nor is any dialogue underway. These are baseless lies”. However, he extended an open invitation to the military establishment for talks if they genuinely cared about Pakistan’s interests and future.
Adding to the pressure for his release, Khan’s sons, 28-year-old Suleman Khan and 26-year-old Qasim Khan, who are British citizens, have broken their silence. Speaking out for the first time, they made a public appeal for their father’s release from Adiala Jail. They are urging international pressure and specifically calling on US President Donald Trump for help. The sons stated that they have exhausted legal and other routes to secure their father’s freedom.
