San Francisco, CA – Tech mogul Elon Musk has officially launched a new political party in the United States, named the “America Party,” following an overwhelming majority vote in a poll conducted on his social media platform, X. The announcement came on Saturday, July 5, 2025, just a day after President Donald Trump signed the “One Big, Beautiful Bill”, legislation that Musk vehemently opposed.

Musk declared the party’s formation with a core mission: “to give you back your freedom”. He asserted that the party aims to address governmental waste and graft, criticizing what he termed America’s “one-party system” despite the presence of two major parties. “By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party and you shall have it!” Musk wrote, stating that the existing system amounted to “bankrupting our country with waste & graft”.

The decision to establish the America Party was heavily influenced by a poll Musk posted on X during US Independence Day celebrations on July 4, asking, “Independence Day is the perfect time to ask if you want independence from the two-party (some would say uniparty) system! Should we create the America Party?”. The poll results showed 65.4% of respondents voting “Yes,” with 34.6% voting “No,” indicating strong public support for a new political entity beyond the Republicans and Democrats.

Musk, formerly one of Trump’s biggest donors in the 2024 election and a former ally of the President, experienced a public falling out with Trump. Their tensions escalated late last month after Trump pushed Republicans to pass his sweeping domestic agenda through the “One Big Beautiful Bill“. Musk strongly condemned the legislation, describing it as “debt slavery” and criticizing Republican lawmakers who supported it despite campaigning on fiscal restraint. Economists estimate that this bill will add $3.4 trillion to the national deficit over the next decade.

Following Musk’s outspoken criticism, President Trump retaliated by threatening to strip federal funding from Musk’s companies and even suggested possible deportation for Musk, who was born in South Africa and became a US citizen in 2002. Despite initial unlikeliness for the South Africa-born businessman to launch a political party, this rift with Trump solidified Musk’s resolve. His previous poll on X had already received an “overwhelming response in favour of a third front”.
