Washington, D.C.President Donald Trump is threatening to sue The Wall Street Journal over a story detailing an alleged birthday letter he sent to financier Jeffrey Epstein, calling the letter “fake” and the story “false, malicious, and defamatory”.

The dispute centers on an article published by The Wall Street Journal about a letter reportedly dated 2003, which they reviewed. The publication claims the letter bears Donald Trump’s name and features typewritten text alongside a sketch of a naked woman. Newsweek, citing The Wall Street Journal, further noted that the drawing includes two arcs representing breasts, with Trump’s signature written beneath the waist, reportedly resembling pubic hair. The letter is also said to read: “Happy Birthday — and may every day be another wonderful secret“.

Trump vehemently denies the letter’s authenticity. In a lengthy social media post on his Truth Social platform Thursday (July 17) night, the President asserted, “These are not my words, not the way I talk. Also, I don’t draw pictures“. He claims to have personally warned The Wall Street Journal and its owner, Rupert Murdoch, that the supposed letter was “a FAKE” and that if printed, they would be sued.

Trump stated that Mr. Murdoch “would take care of it but, obviously, did not have the power to do so”. Furthermore, Trump added that he and White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt informed The Wall Street Journal’s editor-in-chief, Emma Tucker, that the letter was fake, but she “didn’t want to hear that”.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the alleged birthday letter to Epstein, who died in 2019, was part of a collection of birthday notes gathered by Epstein’s longtime associate, Ghislaine Maxwell. These notes were reportedly accrued in a leather book as a 50th birthday gift for Epstein from his family and friends.

This development comes just a day after President Trump ordered Attorney General Pam Bondi to pursue the release of grand jury materials tied to Jeffrey Epstein on July 17. Trump’s order followed a period of frustration from some of his supporters regarding limited disclosures of information related to Epstein.

Days prior to Trump’s announcement, the Department of Justice had released a memo claiming Epstein had no blackmail “client list,” didn’t extort anyone, and died by suicide, a memo that many felt “only added fuel to the fire” of speculation.

Attorney General Bondi had previously hinted in a Fox News interview that a “client list” was “sitting on my desk,” though she later clarified she meant Epstein material more broadly. In February, the Justice Department distributed a binder labeled The Epstein Files: Phase 1 to Republican influencers, which many stated contained mostly already-public information.
