An American media report suggests that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s refusal to support Donald Trump’s nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize likely played a significant role in the soured relations between the two countries. This comes after a period of previously close ties, where both leaders attended large public meetings and described each other as “true friends”.
According to a report in The New York Times, a crucial phone call took place on June 17, when PM Modi was attending the G7 Summit in Canada. During this call, Trump claimed credit for the India-Pakistan ceasefire, and sources familiar with the call indicated that Trump was hinting that PM Modi should support his Nobel nomination.
However, PM Modi “bristled” at this suggestion, reportedly telling the US President that America had “nothing to do” with the ceasefire and emphasized that the understanding to end military confrontation was reached directly between the two sides, without any third-party involvement.

The NYT report highlighted that this disagreement and the Indian Prime Minister’s refusal to engage on the Nobel Prize “played an outsize role” in the deteriorating relationship between the two leaders. Notably, the two leaders have not spoken since this June 17 phone call. Days after the call, Trump publicly commented on the India-Pakistan ceasefire issue again, stating he “won’t get a Nobel Peace Prize for this”. The White House has officially demanded a Nobel Prize for Trump, claiming he ended six wars in six months since taking office.
Beyond the Nobel Prize issue, relations between India and the US have also experienced tensions since PM Modi clarified in the Parliament in July that “no world leader asked India to stop Operation Sindoor,” refuting Trump’s mediation claims without naming him. Subsequently, Trump imposed 25% tariffs on India, followed by additional levies on Indian goods as a punishment for Russian oil purchases.
Amidst these developments, an RMN News Poll conducted as of August 31, 2025, indicates public perception regarding Trump’s Nobel prospects. The poll found that 59.93% of respondents believe President Donald Trump could win the Nobel Peace Prize if he resolves the Kashmir dispute between India and Pakistan, while 34.83% believe he cannot, and 5.24% are undecided.
