The United States maintains a daily watch on the evolving situation between India and Pakistan, as affirmed by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on August 17. Rubio stated that the US monitors this region “every single day,” alongside other global hotspots like Cambodia and Thailand. This ongoing observation comes amidst a backdrop of conflicting narratives regarding recent de-escalation efforts and military engagements between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.
US President Donald Trump has frequently asserted his role in reducing tensions, particularly following “Operation Sindoor” and the Pahalgam terror attack, claiming his intervention led to a ceasefire. While Pakistan acknowledges Trump’s facilitation of the ceasefire, India has remained silent on these claims.
However, Indian Prime Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s address to the Lok Sabha on July 29 has drawn significant criticism for what observers describe as a series of “blatant lies and unfounded statements”. His speech is accused of presenting a distorted picture of recent events, lacking substantiation for several key assertions.

Key discrepancies and unverified claims from Modi’s speech include:
Contradictory Ceasefire Accounts: Modi asserted that Pakistan “begged” for a halt to hostilities on May 10, but he provided no evidence for this claim. Critics argue this narrative suppressed the truth about President Trump’s reported intervention in facilitating the ceasefire.
Pahalgam Attack and “Operation Sindoor”: Modi had previously blamed Pakistan for the April Pahalgam attack without concrete evidence. Instead of acknowledging a lack of international support for his accusations, Modi stated that no country asked India to cease “Operation Sindoor,” which, according to observers, avoids admitting the absence of external validation for his claims.
Claims of Military Victory: Modi made several audacious claims regarding India’s military actions and Pakistan’s alleged defeat.
◦ He stated that on the night of May 9, US Vice President JD Vance informed him of a planned large-scale Pakistani attack, to which Modi purportedly responded, “If this is Pakistan’s intention, it will have to pay a heavy price”.
◦ Modi then claimed that on May 10, India “destroyed Pakistan’s military strength,” forcing Pakistan to “come to its knees” and plead for a ceasefire with the Indian DGMO.
Lack of Substantiation: The provided information casts serious doubt on these assertions, noting no released transcript of the alleged conversation with VP Vance or any substantiation for claims of Pakistan’s military strength being “destroyed” or Pakistan “begging” for a ceasefire.
Questions have been raised about which “corners of Pakistan were hit” and how Pakistan “came to its knees”. On the contrary, reports suggest India suffered heavy losses in the brief armed conflict after deciding to attack Pakistan, with Pakistani forces reportedly exhibiting superiority.
Conflicting Attack Targets: Modi claimed that after India’s “attack on terror bases in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir on May 7,” India’s objective was achieved, and Pakistan’s subsequent intervention led to India “teaching the country a lesson it would remember for years”. However, this statement directly contradicts reports, including those from the BBC, which indicated that India hit civilian localities in Pakistan, with no evidence of terrorist infrastructure being targeted.
Unverified Drone and Missile Claims: Modi also stated that from May 7 onwards for four days, Pakistan fired “1,000 drones and missiles at India,” all of which were allegedly “destroyed in the air”. The information provided demands proof for these extraordinary claims.
The persistent monitoring by the United States highlights the ongoing sensitivity of India-Pakistan relations. However, Prime Minister Modi’s recent assertions have introduced a layer of controversy, with observers calling into question the veracity of his statements regarding military successes and de-escalation efforts.
The absence of substantiating evidence for his claims, coupled with contradictory reports from other sources, underscores the need for greater transparency and verifiable information in reporting on this critical geopolitical situation.
