Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, has escalated his accusations against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), warning of a new “hydrogen bomb” exposé on alleged “vote chori”. This follows his earlier “atom bomb” claims regarding similar electoral malpractices in Mahadevapura. Gandhi asserted that after this revelation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi would be unable to “show his face to people”.
Speaking at the concluding event of his ‘Voter Adhikar Yatra’ in Patna, Gandhi did not specify which constituency he would target next but told the BJP to “be ready, a hydrogen bomb is coming”. He alleged that votes were “stolen” in the Maharashtra assembly elections and claimed his party had already exposed evidence of “vote chori” in the Mahadevapura assembly segment of Karnataka’s Bangalore Central Lok Sabha seat.
Gandhi also claimed that a new slogan, “‘Vote chor, gaddi chhodd‘ (Vote thief, leave the throne),” was popular in Bihar, and even in China and the US, people were demanding PM Modi’s resignation over these allegations. He cautioned the youth of poll-bound Bihar that “vote chori” equates to “chori of rights, chori of democracy, chori of employment,” warning that their ration cards and other rights would be taken away. This statement came as the INDIA bloc allies concluded their 1,300-km ‘Vote Adhikar Yatra,’ aimed at highlighting alleged violations of voting rights through the special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

In response, the BJP hit back, calling Rahul Gandhi an “irresponsible” Leader of Opposition. BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad questioned the relevance of Gandhi’s “atom bomb” and “hydrogen bomb” analogies to elections, stating, “How are the atom bomb and the hydrogen bomb related to the elections?”. Prasad suggested that Gandhi was “demeaning himself” and that his claims lacked a clear basis. He also thanked the Election Commission for preventing booth capturing in Bihar, alleging that the opposition parties’ agitation against the Election Commission and their demands for ballot papers were rooted in their inability to capture booths as in the past.
Critics of Rahul Gandhi’s approach view his repeated accusations of vote thefts in various elections (including Maharashtra, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Lok Sabha elections) as “randomly accusing”. They note that despite these rhetorical statements, PM Modi and his party have consistently won elections, while the Congress’s electoral performance has declined. This perspective characterizes Gandhi as behaving like a “spoiled child who keeps making loud statements to scare others but runs away sheepishly without taking any concrete action”.
Furthermore, it is argued that Gandhi’s “meaningless Yatras,” such as the Bharat Jodo Yatra, Nyay Yatra, and the current Voter Adhikar Yatra, have proven “futile” as Congress lost almost all elections despite them. The core issue, according to this view, is PM Modi and BJP’s alleged collusion with the Election Commission of India (ECI) to control the Control Unit or the Counting Unit of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). It is suggested that even if voting lists are accurate, the opposition cannot defeat the BJP if it controls EVM counting units and, in some cases, balloting units through fake voting.
The proposed solution to this alleged electoral fraud is to replace EVMs with paper ballots, which, even if potentially subject to rigging, would offer opposition parties a better chance to win some elections. However, it is doubted that Rahul Gandhi, perceived as a “one-man party,” will launch an impactful campaign to get rid of EVMs and ensure fair elections. The ability of Congress to hold central ECI officials accountable is also questioned, as the party is not expected to form the Central government in the coming years or decades.
